Report: Trey Mancini, Cubs agree to 2-year deal

Mancini, a cancer survivor, helped the Houston Astros win the World Series last season after arriving Aug. 1 from Baltimore in a three-team trade that included Tampa Bay.

He struggled at the plate with Houston and finished the season batting .239 with 18 home runs, 63 RBIs and a .710 OPS overall for the Orioles and Astros.

Mancini, who turns 31 in March, brings a right-handed bat with power and could be a primary option at designated hitter for the Cubs. He plays first base and the corner outfield spots, also giving Chicago a potential platoon partner for new first baseman Eric Hosmer, a left-handed hitter.

Do the Red Sox and Cubs have the same genera manager. Is collecting strays a thing now?

Well both teams are very wealthy, not particularly good, waiting for kids to develop so trying to stumble through the next few years.

But prertty much every FA season is 5-10 guys that matter and a bunch of strays. The Cubs did actually sign one of the matter guys in Swanson and a top stray in Taillon after grabbing Suzuki and Stroman last year. But sure, we are throwing a lot of 1B/DH crap at the wall waiting to see if any of it sticks. A little weird to tender Reyes a contract then sign Mancini and Matt "Now Nervous" Mervis can't be happy about this signing.

Trey Mancini played collegiately at Notre Dame, so that would be especially nice in Chicagoland. Mancini was a terrific Oriole, and he was a very nice player on some pretty terrible Oriole teams. He can hit lefties for sure, and while he's versatile, he is not great in OF per my untrained eyes. It's funny though, his career splits vL and vR are pretty similar from a wOBA perspective. Seems like a good dude. He is certainly loved by Oriole fans, and I wish him well in Chicago.

Matt "Now Nervous" Mervis
Matt “Never Gonna Get Any MLB Service” Mervis.

Seriously, with this and Hosmer, it’s a flashback to the Hendry/Dusty days of “veteran presence” and “proven winners.”

I'm not sure "played baseball at Notre Dame 10 years ago" is much of a factor these days. (Can't hurt of course.) But I have no problem with this signing, he was on my list after Bell and in a pool with Myers and Voit.

I keep meaning to correct you, but haven't. Franmil was DFA way back at the beginning of the off-season.

This is fine. Hosmer is DFA fodder when he struggles and Mervis forces the issue at AAA.

Whaddya know, I coulda sworn he was still on the 40-man last I checked (Dec probably) but obviously not. I'd be happy to add Franmil to the mix at a reasonable price.

Nope, he was dumped in November. Actually, assigned to AAA to clear from 40 and he chose FA. Same time they moved Bote to AAA and all the other immediate after season 40 man moves. However, he still is a FA and probably best shot is a ST invite, might as well be here.

He didn't survive cancer?

First attempted Franmil Reyes hijack in BBTF history? Anyway, I think I'd give him at least $2 M guaranteed if I was a team with room for a "full-time" DH. He was a disaster last year for both Guardians and Cubs but he was a 121 OPS+ bat before that (in 1500 PA). He's still only 27. Looks like EV and HH% are still good, his HR% cratered anyway -- needs some Judge balls! But for sure, if he'll accept a NRI or one of those $1 M guaranteed if you're on the opening day roster with PA incentives to boost it contracts then better yet.

Isn’t Franmil the exact guy they the Pirates, Reds, A’s of the world should sign for that $2 million guarantee if they have DH AB’s to give?

Worst case, he really does stink, and so what. It’s $2 million. But, if he’s good he’s an AS level power bat for the next 2-3 years and relatively cheap. Shoot, or you trade him at the deadline and get a decent prospect or two for your troubles.

The universal DH was specifically supposed to help this kind of player. I’ll be surprised if he isn’t in ST with the inside shot to be the DH with some crappy team. Or the Rays.

Mancini did get some credit for making an excellent defensive play at a key moment
