Mancini, a cancer survivor, helped the Houston Astros win the World Series last season after arriving Aug. 1 from Baltimore in a three-team trade that included Tampa Bay.
He struggled at the plate with Houston and finished the season batting .239 with 18 home runs, 63 RBIs and a .710 OPS overall for the Orioles and Astros.
Mancini, who turns 31 in March, brings a right-handed bat with power and could be a primary option at designated hitter for the Cubs. He plays first base and the corner outfield spots, also giving Chicago a potential platoon partner for new first baseman Eric Hosmer, a left-handed hitter.

But prertty much every FA season is 5-10 guys that matter and a bunch of strays. The Cubs did actually sign one of the matter guys in Swanson and a top stray in Taillon after grabbing Suzuki and Stroman last year. But sure, we are throwing a lot of 1B/DH crap at the wall waiting to see if any of it sticks. A little weird to tender Reyes a contract then sign Mancini and Matt "Now Nervous" Mervis can't be happy about this signing.
Seriously, with this and Hosmer, it’s a flashback to the Hendry/Dusty days of “veteran presence” and “proven winners.”
I keep meaning to correct you, but haven't. Franmil was DFA way back at the beginning of the off-season.
This is fine. Hosmer is DFA fodder when he struggles and Mervis forces the issue at AAA.
Worst case, he really does stink, and so what. It’s $2 million. But, if he’s good he’s an AS level power bat for the next 2-3 years and relatively cheap. Shoot, or you trade him at the deadline and get a decent prospect or two for your troubles.
The universal DH was specifically supposed to help this kind of player. I’ll be surprised if he isn’t in ST with the inside shot to be the DH with some crappy team. Or the Rays.
