Reports: Diamondbacks agree to extension with GM Mike Hazen

The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a contract extension with general manager Mike Hazen, according to multiple reports.

MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert reports the extension had been discussed for the past 10 days. The length of the extension has not been reported.

The timing of the extension is notable given the potential threat of Hazen being swooped away by his former employer, the Boston Red Sox.

The D-backs’ GM for the past three seasons, Hazen had previously spent time in the Red Sox organization, who fired their president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski on Monday. While no interest or meetings had been reported, Hazen was naturally being linked to the position.

Mind you, given recent practices in Boston, I’d rather stick around Arizona too…..

While they were in talks before the Dombrowski firing, it would be naive to think that event didn't spur DBacks management to get the deal done quickly.

I just hope that in addition to getting some more money or years of security out of ownership, he also extracted a commitment to raise payroll Budget. Hazen has done a pretty good job of fielding a competitive team while at the same time rebuilding the farm system. But that farm system is still at least 2 years away from delivering more than 1 or 2 impact talents to the majors. And those one or two are Daulton Varsho and Pavin Smith (Who had a big second half after 2+ years of disappointment)

They have a lot of talent in the lower minors, and by 2022-23 they should be maturing into full time roles in Phoenix. But the next couple of years could be difficult to maintain an above .500 team with a shot at the wild card without a significant bump in payroll. A lot of Arb 3 guys and free agents over the next two years.

The timing of the extension is notable given the potential threat of Hazen being swooped away by his former employer, the Boston Red Sox.
The Cubs also recently promoted Jason McLeod, whom I saw on a list mentioned as a candidate for the Boston job.

But ideally this thread should be about the Diamondbacks - they are an interesting team!
