Reports: Jean Segura, Marlins strike 2-year deal

Veteran Jean Segura and the Miami Marlins have agreed to a two-year, $17 million deal, according to multiple reports Wednesday night.

It’s the first free agent move of the offseason for the Marlins, who are coming off a 69-93 season—their 12th losing record in the past 13 years. And they’ve watched NL East rivals Atlanta, Philadelphia and the New York Mets make no shortage of moves to try and improve their loaded rosters; the Braves were World Series champions in 2021 and the Phillies won the NL pennant this year before falling to Houston in the World Series.

It sure looks to me like Segura is still a solid, above-average starting player. I don't know which contenders need a 2B but Segura at 1/$12 or 2/$18-20 seems very reasonable to me, I don't see any reason he fell as far as the Marlins at 2/$17. He did miss a couple of months last year but (a) it was the first time in his career and (b) he produced at his usual level for the last 2 months after he came back.

The White Sox seem foolish for not signing Segura in my opinion, especially since they allowed one of their better internal options, Mendick, to walk to NYM for $1M as a utility guy.

Anyone now where to find up to date depth charts? Fangraphs seems to be ignoring all the Japanese signings.

Their positional depth charts are missing people, but their RosterResource tab has Yoshida and Senga for the Sox and Mets, respectively.

I agree with Walt. This seems like a sweet deal for the Marlins, one that the Red Sox, in desperate need of a SS/2B, should have been all over.

Weird. You'd think those think would be linked. If not, why update the confusing and virtually unusable page, and leave the nice clean page out of date?

Yeah, it's an oddity for sure. They have all of the KBO players in their system (perhaps from it looked like their might not be MLB in 2020?) but the guys from NPB seem to only get added once their are in MLB?

The RosterResource pages? Those are awesome.

I don't find them useful. Too much clutter, too much detail on the low minors, and no information about projections. The layout on the two teams charts is much more intuitive. Tell me who is likely to play, and what their projections are.

Supposedly Segura will play 3B for the Marlins. So maybe that's what he preferred?

I'm pretty sure he preferred the most money, though I would have thought he would have gotten more in this market...

this guy would seem to have a huge upside making him a huge bargain.Did he have some sort of injury problem that limited his usage?

This was cheap enough perhaps the Braves should have signed him at this rate and put Riley in LF for 2 years. But, I think they're done spending for 2022 (at least in any substantive way). They have a collection of misfit toys for LF that now includes Eli White too. Maybe they'll trade for Reynolds and shock everyone though. Unless they dump Ozuna, I think they're done any real spending though.

The Marlins have an OF who, if he turns his September 2022 stats into those x 6 in 2023, will be the unanimous choice as NL MVP at 36 HR, 132 RBI, 96 R, .388 AVG, and a slash line of .419/.718/1.137.

spoiler alert: he won't.

but Bryan De La Cruz is... interesting to some sabrmetric folks who don't really see a fluke month. the real problems are sample size, he never did this before, and he's already 26 years old.

games started in MLB:
57 CF
47 RF
34 LF
2 DH

re Segura: he could play 2B with Jazz Chisholm moving over to SS, and aging Miguel Rojas either plays 3B or gets traded.

The roster resource tab is worth it simply for the payroll matrix
