Reports: New York Mets fire acting GM Zack Scott two months after DWI arrest

Acting general manager Zack Scott will not return to the New York Mets after being placed on administrative leave following an arrest on drunken driving charges in August, according to multiple reports.

Scott’s dismissal is hardly a surprise after New York fell apart in the second half and missed the playoffs for a fifth straight season. President Sandy Alderson assumed GM duties with Scott on paid leave and already oversaw the firing of manager Luis Rojas. The Mets are trying to hire a president of baseball operations for the second straight offseason under owner Steve Cohen.

Scott was hired as the Mets’ assistant general manager last offseason to work under close friend and former colleague Jared Porter. Scott was promoted to acting GM in January after Porter was fired following revelations he sent sexually explicit text messages and images to a female reporter in 2016 while working for the Chicago Cubs.

They seem to be going backwards - it’s feeling a lot like the next hire will be George Costanza. Maybe he can teach the Mets how to hit.

Worked for Jeter, although not so much for Tartabull.

There was speculation on a Goldstein chat that he thinks they might not even hire anyone at this rate and just go with the FO they already have in place. That seems like a really Mets thing to do.

No, a really Mets thing to do would be to announce that's their plan, and then have to fire three more key people due to other improprieties.

This leads to the Mets hiring Urban Meyer.

The Mets have to make QO decisions in like 4 days. Cohen is going to end up naming himself PoBO.

or tim tebow.

if anything, i'm sure mets fans are encouraged by their new owner's quick and decisive action.

Something else is going on here. DUI is obviously a horrible offense, but a DUI without any accident or injuries is not usually the type of thing that gets somebody disappeared in major league baseball. I don't object to the Mets' approach, but the manner in which they have seemed to pretend that Zack Scott never existed since the DUI is a bit odd.

I assume it's just that he was an interim guy. Wasn't he a Jared Porter guy? They are bringing in new people anyway. If he had been a long-time Mets guy or if Porter was still in charge they probably wouldn't be firing him now.

The organization was already under a bunch of pressure to clean up their act, since they had to rid themselves of Porter, Mickey Calloway, and Ryan Ellis for harassment, and also canned higher ups in both their legal and HR departments likely at least partially in response to those incidents. Currently, they're not in a situation where they can let anything slide, and a DUI is something you really shouldn't be letting slide even if your organization is otherwise squeaky clean.
