RHP Lance McCullers Jr. agrees to $85M extension with Houston Astros, sources say

Right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. and the Houston Astros are in agreement on a five-year, $85 million contract extension, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

McCullers is coming off a solid 2020 when he returned after missing a season following Tommy John surgery. He went 3-3 with a 3.93 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 11 starts.

The extension will start next season. McCullers and Houston had previously agreed to a one-year, $6.5 million contract for 2021 to avoid arbitration.

Earlier this year, he spoke of wanting to remain with the Astros, who drafted him 41st overall in 2012.

“Houston is where I want to be. This is my home. This is where I see myself,” he said last month. “I would undoubtedly want to be here well into the future. You know, I think the real question would be, ‘Do the Astros see me here? Do the Astros see me as part of their future?’ If the Astros see me as part of their future, as a big part of the future, then I would love to stay here if it makes sense for everyone.”

The Astros don't have much money committed next year and going forward, so this is sensible.

Is this the guy who does the cheating hop thing, or am I thinking of someone else?

And Greinke and Verlander both FAs (and old). Anyway, I've always like McCullers. I happened to see a few of his rookie year starts and was quite impressed -- he reminded me of Mussina. Alas, his durability has been terrible, even before missing a full season (career high 22 starts). I'm maybe a bit surprised it took 5 years and $17 AAV might be a bit high (Hendricks 4/S; Lynn 3/$30; Nola's bought-out FA year is $15 plus a $16 option ... but then Zack Wheeler got 5/$110 ... as quick examples). McCullers is younger than most of those guys but less durable. All pretty marginal in the end, solid enough deal for the Astros, good deal for McCullers under the circumstances.

More money than Salvador Perez, and he hasn't even won a Gold Glove!

No, that's Carter Capps. Apparently he's coaching in the minors for the Mets now, presumably teaching young pitchers how to totally get away with cheating.

This is nice to see, good deal for McCullers, for certain, and as #1 mentioned, the Astros can afford it. I wish they could get an extension done with Correa, too, but don't expect that to happen.

6, all things being equal, I don't know that Correa is worth as much as he thinks he's worth, especially with the SS class that looks to be coming to market next year.

Having said that, if Lindor, Seager and Story sign, then Correa may be the one that drives the market. But as I see it, he's the fourth best SS in the class.

CAA Sports, Thor's agency, may look at this contract as the launching pad for its negotiations with the Amazins.

Am I the only one for whom this is redolent of Darren Dreifort?

It seems like a lot for a guy who can't stay healthy at all.

Yeah, seems like a lot for a guy who probably projects to give you about half a season of slightly above average pitching.

Houston fans are just hoping we don't see an RIP for his arm.
