Rick Renteria out as White Sox manager

After guiding the White Sox to a 35-25 record and a postseason appearances in his fourth season as manager, Rick Renteria and the team “agreed to part ways” on Monday, the team announced.

The move comes as somewhat of a surprise but demonstrates the Sox’ resolve to take the next step in the fifth year of their rebuild after bowing out of the postseason with a Wild Card series loss to the Athletics.

Renteria had one year remaining on his contract, as does most of his coaching staff. The status of the coaching staff will be determined moving forward and in consultation with the team’s next manager, according to the team’s release.

While in full rebuild mode, the Sox were 67-95, 62-100 and 72-89 in Renteria’s first three seasons. The Sox hired Renteria as a bench coach one year after the Cubs fired him as their manager in 2014, then named him to succeed Robin Ventura before the 2017 season. Renteria, replaced by Joe Maddon, spent one year on the job with the Cubs.

This is a break from White Sox past practice. I wonder if they have a specific candidate in mind, and if that person is from outside the organization.

Ozzie Guillen is available.

Ozzie's got a BTF account that only alludes to \"####\" rather than saying it? Who knew?

"Guiding a Chicago team during a rebuild only to get fired when the organization thinks they can find someone better" is an oddly specific niche, but Renteria owns it.

That takes care of all the managers with the initials "RR". If they decide to move on to the letter "S", Scott Servais is in trouble.

Gardenhire was hired by Detroit to manage them during the rebuild but didn't make it all the way through the process. Maybe Renteria can take his spot in that chair.

Jerry Reinsdorf reportedly called Guillen personally to tell him he'll not be a candidate for the job.

I didn't hear the press conference personally, but I'm told that Rick Hahn said he wanted someone with October experience and with a background in a championship organization. So I'm guessed AJ Hinch or Joey Cora are at the top of his wish list.

In other news, apparently eternal pitching coach Don Cooper is also out.

Does that mean he didn't like the 19-pitcher game?

Alex Cora not Joey

Don Cooper was pitching coach forever. This, and Hahn's statement that he expects the next manager to come from outside the organization, is truly a change from past practice.

Mike Matheny is now the third-most tenured Central manager after one year, and could be second if Francona steps down for health reasons.

Heck, hiring Renteria was a change from past practice. He was the first managerial hire with previous experience since .... Torborg, I believe. Him or Fregosi. I forget who came first and don't feel like looking it up.

I guess this is the opposite of over reacting to small sample size, short season results.

I'm hoping this will work out more like when Reinsdorf pushed Doug Collins out in favor of Phil Jackson, but it will probably be closer to Jeff Torborg for Gene Lamont.

Fregosi was Harrelson's hire during the....eventful summer of 1986. Torborg was Larry Himes's hire in the fall of 1988. Yes, I have this information committed to memory, which speaks ill of my priorities in life.

They needed someone with experience, not that first-time skipper they 86ed.

Jeff Pearlman had a good April Fools' joke about having a book on the 1986 White Sox. He'd be the perfect guy to chronicle that year.

Poor Carlton Fisk, wandering around left field. That, even more than watching the tattered remains of Steve Carlton and George Foster, is my representative memory of the Harrelson Era.

This surprises me but I'm also surprised it's been 4 seasons already so that's long enough to decide whether you think this guy can take you the next step. It is hard to think who has "championship" experience other than Hinch and Cora unless they are hauling Bochy or Yost out of retirement. I suppose champtionship experience could be bench coach for a winner.

As to Renteria ... yeah, Det seems a good possibility. Is Texas moving on yet? Renteria could become the poor man's Showalter or Frank Robinson.

Here's a factoid ... Arizona's farm director is Josh Barfield.

Reinsdorf is weird, man.

Better than passing out in a cornfield.
