Rob Manfred booed while presenting World Series trophy to Dodgers; fans confused by speech

MLB’s commissioner paused as he was greeted with jeers amid a postgame ceremony honoring the Dodgers for their first World Series win since 1988. It was clear he recognized the negative response.

The boos continued throughout Manfred’s winding speech, which confused many fans watching from home for its slow, inconsistent cadence. He explained afterward his slurring of words came from technical difficulties.

I was worried he had suffered a stroke.

Technical difficulties with his mouth?

Former Red Sox sideline reporter Jenny Dell said it can be a lot trickier than you think to speak in that situation because the response time from the loudspeakers can get a bit disorienting.

In the comments someone pointed out he was wearing am earpiece and suggested if he was getting his own voice back through the earpiece on a delay that would explain it. Your brain would basically try to synch them up.

However much fans were booing, it wasn't enough.

They weren't booing. They were saying "Boo...anfred."

It would have been almost worth it to fly out and scream from somewhere he could hear me: "GO BACK TO DELTA LAKE WHERE YOU BELONG, ASSWIPE!"

But he's done this before and I don't remember it ever being an issue.

The thing that almost certainly means nothing but seemed humorously telling was that he apparently couldn't pronounce the world "player" without effort but had no problem with "sponsored by Chevrolet".

It's pretty obvious what happened here. Manfred could not attend the game, so instead they hired Christopher Walken to play the part of Manfred for the night and he gave the speech. Watch that clip again knowing that information and it all clicks.

Speaking in a huge stadium with your voice amplified and slightly echoing can surely be hugely disorienting.

I don't find his performance from last year to be all that different. His hand movements seem to indicate someone who is nervous. Once again, his smoothest phrase is "presented by Chevrolet".

2018 WS MVP Steve Pearce

He seems more normal, but man he nails "presented by Chevrolet". During the awkward moment where Mandred and Pearce are both holding the trophy's legs and staring into each other's eyes.

Not having the guy from Fox (Kevin something?) was already a net plus this year. Every year he makes some joke about the trophy being so heavy. Although, in fairness, he also clearly practices saying "presented by Chevrolet". Those Chevy guys must be harsh masters.

Maybe he was concentrating too hard on not saying “piece of metal.”

When was the last time a commissioner in any sport didn't get booed when they handed out a trophy?

Guess it's lucky that Justin Turner didn't win the MVP.
