Roberto Pérez diagnosed with a concussion

Indians catcher Roberto Pérez has been diagnosed with a concussion. He sustained it after taking a ball off the mask in last night’s game against the Athletics.

Manager Terry Francona called it a “mild” concussion, but if we’ve learned anything in sports in the past several years it’s that you have to assume all brain injuries are serious unless and until the symptoms go away. Francona said that the team will make a decision today about whether to place Pérez on the injured list, but assume that’ll be a yes.

Question: Is there any particular reason why catchers seem more susceptible to concussions, beyond the ways in which that position generally wears down those who play it?

I would think it's mostly the fact that they don't have any time to react to foul tips. Taking a 90+ MPH baseball to your face a couple dozen times a year can't be good for your brain, even if there's a mask there.

It seems clear they'd prefer not to put Perez on the injured list, but goodness: With Perez unavailable, the bench right now is Mike Freeman and Eric Haase. That's it. Seems like you're better off with an extra position player and no Roberto Perez for the next six days than you'd be waiting for your career 72 OPS+ catcher to come back from a brain injury.

They get hit in the head a lot more often than other positions (with both balls and bats), and with balls that are generally traveling faster than at other positions? I don't think there's much more to it than that.
