Rockies add veteran slugger Moustakas

The Rockies signed veteran designated hitter-corner infielder Mike Moustakas to a Minor League contract on Sunday as an option at third base if Elehuris Montero is not fully ready to step into the position.

Second baseman Brendan Rodgers will have surgery to repair a dislocated and damaged left shoulder and could miss the entire season. The club’s immediate reaction was to move third baseman Ryan McMahon to second, where he played earlier in his career.

Montero, 24, who batted .233 with six home runs in a 53-game debut last year, has plenty of power potential but is working on his defense. That’s where the 34-year-old Moustakas, who was released by the Reds in January with one year left on his four-year, $64 million contract, gets a nothing-to-lose opportunity.

Ahh, spring, when Mike Moustakas gets to be a "slugger." I'm surprised they didn't go with All-Star. He was a slugger once upon a time and has still managed 21 HR in his last 650 PA which is nothing to be ashamed of. Alas we all know the true headline is "Rox caught between rock and hard place, behind 8 ball, signed the last breathing veteran that's cheaper than Jurickson Profar."

Slightly surprised to see that McMahon has never been an AS or a GGer although the new utility GG might solve that. I guess a battle among him, CJ Cron and Bryant for "best Rockie."

His OPS+ the last 2 years: 68 and 74, with negative WAR both years. Age 34. Such a Rockies signing.

I guess they have decided not to move Bryant back to third. I was never particularly impressed with him as an outfielder especially his throwing arm.

You think his arm is a problem in left field, so he should play third base?

I don't think anybody ever considered Bryant a GG OF (certainly not a GG 3B) but he's always been solid out there. Possibly if he'd been moved permanently earlier (Braun, Gordon) he'd be a +5 now or something. It was always a mystery why the Rox paid him all that money if they were also convinced he couldn't handle 3B anymore -- that might have been correct but why pay so much for a LF? Bryant is probably more Michael Brantley at this point, maybe with a worse glove. Brantley 30-35 2600 PA, 16 WAR, 8 WAA, 0 dWAR, $83 M.

Moustakas was a slighly-above-average guy at his best, when his K-rate was about 1 in 6, now he's been around 22% for the past three years. It's just a MiL deal and the Rockies, but still feels like throwing money away.
