Rockies agree to three-year contract with catcher Elias Díaz

Catcher Elias Díaz signed a three-year deal with the team, good for the 2022, 2023 and 2024 seasons. The 31-year-old hit 18 home runs in 2021, which was tied for third-most among catchers in the National League, and a career-best. Díaz also batted .266 with 44 RBIs in 106 games.

The Maracaibo, Venezuela native also threw out 14 would-be base stealers a season ago, and his 42.1 caught stealing percentage was the second-highest in the Majors behind Salvador Pérez (43.9%).

What a Rockies thing to do. I've never heard of this guy. He's been OK -- 2.6 WAR, -1.5 WAA. He was quite good in 20018 and 2021, quite terrible in 2019, two other half-time-ish seasons at replacement level. He was already under their control for 2022, this buys out the first 2 FA years as well presumably at about $5.5 M each and you're probably still gonna need another C for 60-80 starts a year. Is he a master pitch framer? Doesn't seem so, fangraphs gives him just 0.4 career WAR.

Contrast with Curt Casali, somebody I'd never really looked at until this year. He was with the Rays, put up average numbers in limited time as a backup. That's good for the backup but still the Rays just sold him to the Reds. In three seasons for the Reds, still a backup, 2.5 bWAR, 1 WAA. He made $1 M in his first super-2 arb year, $1.5 in his second. The Reds decided that was too rich for their blood and non-tendered him. The Giants picked him up for $1.5 M and he again played at an average level in a backup role. He's entering his last year of arb assuming the Giants tender him.

So Casali with 5.1 bWAR, 4.5 fWAR, 1.2 bWAA in 1200 PA is still only around $5.5 M in career earnings while Elias Diaz 2.6 bWAR, 0.4 fWAR, -1.5 bWAA in 1200 PA is gonna make that much in one season and earn at least $17 M for his career. Cuz Rockies.
