People in glass houses, and all that. “What the Padres are doing, I don’t 100% agree with, though I know that our fans probably agree with it. We’ll see how it works out,” Monfort said Saturday, according to the Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders.
The Padres are projected to have the third-highest payroll in the league in 2023 at a whopping $251 million. Monfort believes the lucrative contracts handed out by teams this offseason increases the pressure on Colorado to spend.
“That puts a lot of pressure (on us),” Monfort said. “But it’s not just the Padres, it’s the Mets, it’s the Phillies. This has been an interesting year.”

1. The Duke Posted: January 29, 2023 at 08:49 AM (#6114953)What are they doing, trying to win?
Trying to win is fine, just don't spend any money while doing so ;-) Cuts into the guaranteed profits.
They're spending way above their profile or market size.
This makes the fans of other organizations at that level of the baseball hierarchy notice that maybe this poverty excuse doesn't wash after all.
"We can't compete with the Dodgers" doesn't raise an eyebrow among Rockies or Reds or Pirates fans. "We can't compete with the Padres"... that WILL make a smaller-city fan go hmmmm...
Yes, owners live in dread that fans will realize that EVERY SINGLE TEAM is profitable with a $150M payroll. The top 10 teams are profitable at $250M
And a bunch of team would have a whole lot more wins if they regularly spent $150M on payroll instead of <$100M.
Though, to be fair, another whole bunch would have a whole lot more losses.
Sure. But the league would be a lot more entertaining if teams were most all bunched between 70 and 90 wins. Last year we had 9 teams with <70 wins, and 5 at 99+.
You can't have a great pennant race between excellent teams anymore, b/c there are so many WC slots, so parity is the way to generate entertainment.
