Rockies, Reds Swap Jeff Hoffman For Robert Stephenson

In a challenge trade of sorts, the Rockies and Reds have agreed to swap a pair of former top pitching prospects. The two clubs agreed to a trade Wednesday sending right-hander Jeff Hoffman and minor league righty Case Williams from Colorado to Cincinnati in exchange for right-hander Robert Stephenson and minor league outfielder Jameson Hannah. The Reds have formally announced the swap.

Hoffman, 28 in January, was the ninth overall pick by the Blue Jays in the 2014 draft and went to the Rockies as the centerpiece of the blockbuster deadline swap that shipped Troy Tulowitzki to Toronto. The hope at the time of the deal was that the former East Carolina University ace could develop into a key front-of-the-rotation piece at the ever-challenging Coors Field, but that simply hasn’t panned out.

I'll save you 10 seconds of b-r searching. Hoffman 79 ERA+ in 230 IP, middling K-rate, seems to have been reasonably healthy the whole time. He moved quickly -- drafted in 2014, in AAA and the majors in 2016. Stephenson 88 ERA+ in 208 IP, very nice K-rate, drafted out of HS way back in 2011, also appears to have been healthy the entire time, cracked AAA in 2015, majors in 2016. It's like we ran an experiment where one kid went to the minors and the other to college and to make the experiment fair, we are now having them split ML environments.

Based on K-rates, we'd have to give Stephenson (9.6 K/9 minors and majors, over 11 the last couple of years) the edge here but Colorado is not where you want to go looking for a breakout, especially if you were already giving up 1.7 HR/9.

The Reds traded robert stephenson? Great trade! Who did we get?

this seems like a good ole' fashioned challenge trade. Though, i am going to assume both guys end up sucking for their new teams too...

Hoffman possesses high-end velocity and spin rate

Sounds like an interesting project for Kyle Boddy.

"Challenge trade" puts me in mind more of McGriff & Fernandez for Alomar & Carter. (Granted, most don't reach anything close to that level.) This is "I'm missing a Bobby Knoop 1969 card but I have two 1970s" ... "hey, I'm missing a Bobby Knoop 1970 but have two 1969s" ... "Say, that gives me an idea ..."

(No, not realistic, I musta got 17 Bobby Knoops in 1970.)

I suppose genuine challenge trades are nearly impossible now. I suppose we get the occasional "1 pre-FA year of my guy I'm not gonna re-sign for 1 pre-FA year of your guy I'm not gonna re-sign" or "my vet on a bad contract for vet on a bad contract" but a genuine "I'd rather have your good player for the next 4 years than my good player for the next 4 years" trades ... there must be some of recent vintage but they're not springing to mind. (To be clear not "my star for your prospects" trades -- those might qualify as "challenges" but are mainly current wins for future wins so not really a head-to-head match-up.)

"Challenge trade"

Rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. (At least for the Rockies.)

Sure, one of them could break out. But if their current employers think they won't...
