Rosenthal: Dombrowski’s status a hot topic; my thoughts on Manager of the Year; home runs and more home runs – The Athletic

This idea is insane, which fits Dan Shaughnessy well. If the Red Sox fire Dombrowski, the hubris of ownership will be exposed.
I believed the Red Sox erred when they fired Cherrington. He was building a great farm system to establish a sustainable playoff model. After winning in 2013, ownership wanted to win NOW. They brought in Dombrowski who is great as a win NOW exec. He delivered. Now they might want to fire him for delivering? Insanity.

On Aug. 6, longtime columnist Dan Shaughnessy wrote in The Boston Globe, “I’ll be shocked if Dave Dombrowski is back with the Red Sox next season.” Dombrowski is under contract through 2020, but his status is a hot topic around baseball. Which raises the question: If the Sox replace him, what will be the expectation for their next top executive?

The way Sox ownership operates, back-to-back World Series titles would figure to be the new standard. Evidently, one championship is no longer enough.

The team’s hiring of Dombrowski in August 2015 prompted the resignation of general manager Ben Cherington less than two years after Cherington won a title. The removal of Dombrowski after this season would be even quicker – the Sox beat the Dodgers in the 2018 Series, remember? Oh, and almost forgot: The team, in its first three seasons under Dombrowski, won the AL East three times.

The Boston ownership may well have come to the conclusion that Dombrowski does not have the inclination nor the ability to rebuild the farm system, and set themselves up for future success. If Dombrowski really is a one trick pony, then getting rid of him is quite rational. Since none of us have the slightest sense of what kind of plan to rebuild (or much more likely, to rebuild on the fly) Dombrowski has discussed with the owners, it really is hard to express the opinion that the idea is 'insanity'.

Having said all that, we are talking about Dan Shaughnessy here, a man who makes every single NY sportswriter seem like a reincarnation of Grantland Rice. So who knows?

No it's not. That "trick" is a really important trick. This is still a win now roster. It'd be stupid to "rebuild" when you have Betts, Bogaerts, Devers, and Benintendi all in their prime.

If you want to put someone else in charge of drafting and development, just do that.

Dombrowski has made mistakes but 3 straight division titles and a World Series title is kind of an "Exceeds Expectations" on the annual review I would think. The thing about Dombrowski that gets overlooked is that for all the talk of him gutting the farm system he really has been close to perfect in terms of picking which guys to keep and which ones to deal. There aren't any trades that I look at as a Sox fan and get really upset over. He's kept Benintendi and Devers and if the Sox genuinely want a GM that will be able to get Mookie re-signed obviously Dombrowski knows how to get a big deal done.

The other piece of this is that the Sox minor league system has had a good year. It's not where it was in the late naughties but they have a good group of talent and the last couple of drafts are at the moment looking good.

Now DD is getting older. He's 63 and even execs lose their fastball at some point so maybe if you apply the old "better to lose a guy a year too early than a year too late" to a GM then maybe this IS the time to cut ties with him. But for my money I think he's still doing the job for the Sox.

BREAKING NEWS: ESPN reporting Dombrowski has been fired:
The Boston Red Sox fired president Dave Dombrowski on Sunday. The team plans to elevate assistant general manager Eddie Romero to lead its baseball-operations department, sources told ESPN.

Dan Duquette is available.

Shaughnessy obviously knew something on the inside, as a mere month later, Dombrowski is toast.

Totally agree with Jim's intro. This is bullshit, as was forcing out Cherington.

I can't help reading that as "Hiring Dombrowski was a mistake, so is getting rid of him!"
