Rosenthal: New push in A’s San Jose quest

“Weeks turn into years. How quick they pass”

Finally, there is movement toward solving one of baseball’s most vexing problems.

Baseball is trying to accelerate a decision on whether to allow the Oakland Athletics to relocate to San Jose, according to major league sources.

Commissioner Bud Selig met with top A’s officials earlier this month and plans to meet with San Francisco Giants executives within two weeks, sources say.

The meetings represent the biggest step toward a resolution of the Athletics’ quest to relocate since Selig appointed a three-member committee to study the franchise’s’ situation in March 2009.

...The Athletics, independent of the Giants’ opposition, are “checking off boxes” to ensure that baseball is satisfied with their plan to relocate, sources say.

The team, according to one source, has agreed to expand the capacity of Cisco Field, its proposed 32,000-seat ballpark, as one of the conditions for a move.

They should also be forced to keep the name "Athletics" as a condition.

Is there still real estate development associated with the new stadium, or does Wolff want to move the team even outside of such considerations?

32,000 seats seems small to me.

32,000 seats seems small to me.

Smaller than pre-2006 expansion Wrigley. I'm assuming it would be the smallest park in the majors.

If I was the A's owner I would threaten to go all "Al Davis" on MLB and just up and move the team to San Jose and then fight it out in court.

MLB has legal rights that the NFL does not. I doubt the A's want to risk their franchise to challenge the anti-trust exemption in court. At least unless the alternative is bankruptcy.

#7. But, similarly, MLB does not want the ridiculous anti-trust exemption to be challenged. It's doubtful that anyone today will buy the ludicrous "we're not a business" argument that they did in 1922 or whenever it came up before.

Back in my day, they useta build stadiums with 80,000 seats, so they could baseball and football in 'em! There were always plenty o' empty seats, and you could sneak into the front row by the third inning! And we liked it!

I do not mind if the A's move, that is a part of their legacy as a franchise. But if they change the name I'll switch to being a full out Nats fan.

Why is everyone worried they'll change their name? I can't see any reason why they would.

I'm not an A's fan, but I'd be seriously pissed if they lost the elephant.
