Rosenthal: The Reds are interested in Zack Wheeler; the Braves’ big bullpen bet; more notes

As first reported by Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times, free-agent third baseman Josh Donaldson is a legitimate consideration for the Dodgers.

Donaldson, who turns 34 on Dec. 8, would provide right-handed balance for a team heavy in left-handed hitters (Cody Bellinger, Corey Seager, Max Muncy, Joc Pederson, Alex Verdugo, Gavin Lux). He also would bring an edge to a team that might benefit from such a jolt.

As the Braves discovered, Donaldson can be a bit of an acquired taste — as one club source put it, “he’s loud, in your face, an alpha who will test the room.” He went through an adjustment period in Atlanta, and Freddie Freeman talked with him at one point about better fitting into the clubhouse, the source said. But Donaldson eventually found his niche, and the Braves came to relish his daily intensity and competitiveness.

The team wants him back.

Justin Turner?
   2. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: November 23, 2019 at 02:23 PM (#5903445)
Sounds like he’s kind of a douche. Which isn’t particularly surprising, what with the Eric Byrnes haircut.

The phrase "test the room" makes me absolutely hate him. I despise people like that.

Does ‘test the room’ mean anything other than ‘I’m gonna be a douche. You got a problem with that, bro??’

Donaldson didn't use the phrase, "one club source" did. Or perhaps I misunderstood: is it people who use the phrase who are objectionable, or people who do what the phrase denotes who are objectionable? (And I'll freely admit that I don't have any idea what the phrase denotes.)

Justin Turner?

Presumably a move to 1B (or Donadlson moves there but I believe Donadlson is the better defender). Dodgers had 9 different players start at 1B last year, including (I hadn't realized) Joc Pederson with 19 starts. Muncy led the way with 42 but had more starts at 2B (62). Or a trade of somebody, especially if they think Gavin Lux is ready. But it probably makes more sense to move one of Lux, Muncy or Pederson (all LHB) than Turner. But it does all add up to reasons why Donaldson shouldn't be particularly high on the Dodgers' wish list.

Other things I hadn't realized about the 2019 Dodgers. Pederson got 0 starts and only 5 innings in CF. I thought Muncy played some LF but he had 0 innings in the OF this year and only 9 innings last year.

People who do what the phrase denotes.

To me, it means that Donaldson comes into a new clubhouse and instead of being friendly and charitable and open, he immediately starts prodding, testing, playing with people in order to quickly suss out the pecking order and establish himself near the top of it. I associate it with, say, making purposefully hurtful jokes in front of an audience and then quickly and insincerely apologizing - it's not pure bullying exactly, but it's a way that some ########## hope to demonstrate dominance.

I haven't seen a lot of this type of behavior since I was a teenager. I don't know if that means that everyone outgrows this #### or if I've been good at avoiding people like this. Not surprising that a professional clubhouse would be a hotbed of it, though.
   8. DCA Posted: November 23, 2019 at 08:47 PM (#5903498)
The reason the Dodgers might want Donaldson is that he's good and they can afford it. And there's room for him.

1B:

37 GS by Freese (retired)
28 GS by Bellinger (now OF only)
19 GS by Pederson (he was not good there, should be OF only)
36 GS by Beaty, Rios, White, Gyorko, Kike (much inferior to Donaldson)

2B:

63 GS by Kike
5 GS by Negron, Gyorko, Barnes

SS:

7 GS by Kike, Negron

3B:

13 GS by Beaty, Gyorko, Rios, Negron, Kike

That adds up to 208 games that could be improved upon (assume Muncy, Seager, Turner, Taylor repeat their roles). Lux (19 GS in 2019) picks up a big chunk of that, but there's still close to a full-time job available.

I prefer "EHernandez" there.

couldn't believe the first time I saw his nickname up on a giant LED scoreboard at a game at Citi Field.

I'm looking around - understanding the demographics of the crowd - and thinking, "Really?"

then again, this summer I saw an Irish golfer win a big tournament in Northern Ireland and say he was "glad to win on his home turf."

hey, I like this new "move on" world better. just didn't see it coming.
   10. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: November 24, 2019 at 08:26 AM (#5903538)

I would have thought the Irish golfer saying that Northern Ireland is his "home turf" is more an example of not moving on (i.e. he's implicitly not recognizing the UK's sovereignty over Northern Ireland)? I'm not an expert even though I have spent a bit of time in both Ireland/N. Ireland.

They want someone younger and more durable I guess ;). Turner does only have one more year on contract. Back up 3rd and 1st base could be an option.

Other things I hadn't realized about the 2019 Dodgers.

They lost the NLDS to the Washington Nationals, who went on to win the 2019 WORLD SERIES?! Because that's a thing!

Sorry, I was just testing the room.

Yeah, no, gotta go with the last name if you're not going to use accents.
   15. Rally Posted: November 25, 2019 at 08:29 AM (#5903653)
Accent makes all the difference. Without, it's an offensive word. With, it's just a nickname that should bother nobody.

I have to admit that I have trouble with accent marks on the computer. I've seen how to do it but I forgot, anyway it's a multistep process, definitely more involved than hitting a letter on the keyboard. In OOTP I have to spend a lot of time removing accents because when I export to excel I wind up with a string of unintelligible characters replacing every accented letter.

But don’t we all know, in context, that it’s just a nickname (and a common one for ‘Enrique’ in Latin America), even if the poster didn’t know how to get the accent mark?

Just change the spelling to "Kiki", which I believe is how it's pronounced anyway.
   18. PreservedFish Posted: November 25, 2019 at 10:01 AM (#5903671)
It's pronounced KeeKay, right?

It's not clear to me that his nickname actually is spelled with an accent. On his instagram account he's listed as "Kike Hernández."
   19. PreservedFish Posted: November 25, 2019 at 10:04 AM (#5903672)
Also, recent photos show that he's on an adventurous tropical vacation with a hot chick. They went paddleboarding and snuggled in front of a majestic volcano. He's obviously doing better at life than I am, so I think he gets to decide how his name is spelled.
   20. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: November 25, 2019 at 10:52 AM (#5903695)

It's not spelled with an accent in Spanish (I don't think the accent on the "e" is actually correct from a pronunciation standpoint -- it's KEE-Kay not Kee-KAY) but it was added during broadcasts specifically to deal with this issue.

The accent, which is not typically used in Spanish spellings of the name, first started to appear in Hernandez’s name during broadcasts when he was in the minors. “Teams started using it to avoid controversy,” Hernandez has said. “If you don’t read it in Spanish, it can be offensive.”

How about they just go with Enrique?
   22. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: November 25, 2019 at 11:28 AM (#5903709)
BB-Ref uses "Enrique" on the LAD team page (it doesn't look like they can include accents in the team listings) but uses Kiké at the top of his player page where they can do accents.

FWIW, if you're on a computer, you can type "é" by holding down ALT, typing "130" on the number pad, and then releasing the ALT key.

Other helpful letters:

ALT + 160 - á
ALT + 161 - í
ALT + 162 - ó
ALT + 163 - ú
ALT + 164 - ñ

When I hold down the "e" key, it just types "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee".

Huh. Is it an Apple thing? Works great on my iMac. Although now I've been alerted to the fact that it's unduly difficult for me to type "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee". (Don't worry guys, I copied & pasted this time)

On Windows 7 run "Character Map" under Accessories -> System Tools. Click on the desired glyph in the grid.

You can also look in the corner of that little app to get the UTF-8 key code to type for future reference, which you get by Alt+Number Pad sequence (if you keep your NumLock on); if you keep your NumLock off all the time like I do so you can use the arrow keys, then it's Alt+Shift+Number Pad sequence.

I created myself a cheat sheet for commonly used characters:

Ch ALT+
á - 0225
é - 0233
í - 0237
ñ - 0241
ó - 0243
ö - 0246
ú - 0250
ü - 0252
Ü - 0220
¿ - 0191
¡ - 0161 (inverted bang)

Or just spell it Quique like #24 suggests, crisis averted.
