Roy Steele, the A’s ‘Voice of God,’ dies

Roy Steele, who worked as the A’s public address announcer at the Oakland Coliseum for close to 40 years, died Thursday at his home in Auburn.

“We mourn the loss of “The Voice of God,” Roy Steele, who passed away today at his home,” the A’s said in a statement. “As the PA voice of the A’s for nearly four decades, his booming baritone filled the Coliseum from the Mustache Gang to Billy Ball, the Bash Brothers and Moneyball. Beloved by all, he touched the lives of generations of A’s fans. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”

“Unfortunately, considering all of the circumstances affecting the organization at this time, we have decided not to continue your life beyond May 28,” read the email, sent by GM David Forst. “This was a difficult decision and it’s one that comes at a time when a number of our full-time employees are also finding themselves either furloughed or, like Chester Farrow, dead. For all of this, I am sorry.”

Definitely the PA announcer I've heard most. Rest in peace.

Bummer. Didn't know him by name, but absolutely one of the few MLB PA announcers whose voice was instantly identifiable for me.

With the exception of Bob Sheppard, most public-address announcers are only known locally.

RIP, Mr. Steele. Perhaps only Connie Mack served with the A's longer.

RIP Mr. Steele, I will never forget how excited I would get hearing his voice walking to my seat with all of the smells of the Coliseum (bathroom and hot dog smells mostly).

"Dr. Freud, please pick up the white courtesy phone, Dr. Freud...."

RIP Mr. Steele, I will never forget how excited I would get hearing his voice walking to my seat with all of the smells of the Coliseum (bathroom and hot dog smells mostly).

Reading about Steele's passing sent me to the internet for an hour of looking for clips of Marshall Mann, the Braves PA announcer of my childhood. Hearing the voice, I can totally smell the smells and see the sights in my mind like it was happening right now. That burst of green when I first walked through one of the portals from the concourse into the stadium... nothing like it...

#7 Yeah that super bright and wide open stadium with all of the players warming up... hope it can come back soon!
