Royals sign 3B Franco to $2.95 million contract

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals signed third baseman Maikel Franco to a $2.95 million contract Friday to be their everyday third baseman next season.

The deal, which was agreed to earlier this week, includes up to $1.05 million in incentives.

I know a 1/$3 contract doesn't really matter but this sort of deal still stymies me. What has Franco ever done to deserve a guaranteed contract? An NRI sure or one of those contracts that pays him $2 M if he's on the opening day roster maybe. Maybe they know something we don't, like he's been working with a magical hitting coach? Could be but (a) I still don't see why he'd be able to garner a guaranteed contract before showing improvement and (b) if you really think he might break out big, then add a team option.

Honest to God, when I read the headline I thought it was Julio Franco.

Nah, I doubt Julio Franco could play 3B these days. If anyone signs him, it will be as a 1B/DH.

To Walt Davis: I think there is a lot of skepticism about the Phillies' coaching approach over the past couple years, based on most of their players getting steadily worse over that period while complaining about being confused, so guys like Franco will be seen as good reclamation projects.

If i am reading baseball-reference correctly, they have control of him for 2021 also, if he ends up being worth it.

Yes, he was non-tendered with two Arb years left.

Julio Franco is still (not) dead!

Let's say he has a breakout year, maybe an OPS+ of 135 in some form or another. What does he get in arbitration?

I agree with Walt that they should have just gotten an option. I think if they did that, they could decline the option and still go to arbitration, right?

Talks with Julio Franco broke off when KC wouldn’t guarantee a fourth year.

Are options legal on contracts through a player's arb years? Off the top of my head I can't think of any options-in-arb-years contracts, though I could easily be missing some. (I suspect that if one is out there it's on the first contract of a Japanese or maybe Cuban player who came to the US as an established professional.) Arbitration is functionally a team option for an unknown amount of money, so I could imagine the CBA prohibiting regular options during the arb years.
