Royals sign outfielder Jarrod Dyson

The Royals have signed free agent outfielder Jarrod Dyson to a one-year deal, according to multiple reports. Jon Heyman reports he will earn $1.5 million.

The 36-year old Dyson spent the first seven years of his career with the Royals, hitting .260/.325/.353 from 2010 to 2016. He was a prolific base-stealer, swiping 176 bases with an 85 percent success rate in his days with the Royals. He was also a fantastic defender, worth 6.1 dWAR, according to Baseball-Reference.

Dyson was traded to the Mariners in 2017 for pitcher Nate Karns, and has spent the last three seasons bouncing around from the Diamondbacks to the Pirates to the White Sox. He appeared in 32 games last year, split between Pittsburgh and Chicago, and hit .180/.231/.180 with six steals in six attempts.

Plus defender, plus speed if he gets on base or as a pinch runner. For the price likely a decent pickup.

For a second there I thought someone had inexplicably performed necromancy on a thread from ten years ago.

Is this a major league contract? I'm surprised anyone is willing to sign a 36-year-old pinch runner/defensive replacement in the age of the 12-13 man pitching staff. Doubly so a team that has not much use for pinch runners or defensive replacements because they're already bad. Surely there are some kids kicking around the minors who are blazing fast but nonprospects because they can't hit? Why not just take on one of them as a PR/DP and try to work on his hitting a little, and save a million bucks while you're at it? Just slapping at the ball and running, you can't do a lot worse than Dyson's .213/.296/.288 over the last three years.

Leadership and Veteran Presence and all that, I guess, but this is a .400-.450 team in any case.

Terrance Gore is available.

EDIT: Actually, no he's not. He signed a minor league deal with the Braves a couple weeks ago.

He's not! Signed with the Braves.

I heard Dayton Moore recently talk about how they didn't want young guys sitting on the bench, they'd rather them get ABs in the minors. So I think they want Edward Olivares and Nick Heath to play regularly in Omaha, and Dyson serve as a 4th OF that doesn't play much.

But idk, Heath isn't exactly a prospect, his skillset is virtually identical to Dyson's. Seems like he could have served that role.

Well, he can vacuum up fly balls.

Dyson's a really useful player as long as you accept that he's not a starter. His ideal usage was probably 2014, when he was in 120 games with only 260 at bats.

The combination of excellent defense and excellent baserunning was what set Dyson apart in his glory years. Pinch run him any time after the fifth inning and get one elite baserunner plus three innings of elite defense, at the cost of one or two subpar at bats. Don't give him developmental at bats, just use him for the stuff he's good at and minimize the stuff he's bad at.

Heath literally led all minor leaguers in stolen bases in 2019!
