Royals trade pitcher Homer Bailey to Oakland for minor-league infielder

The Royals scratched Bailey from the lineup roughly a half hour before his start against the Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium, and just before first pitch they announced he’d been traded to Oakland in exchange for minor-league infielder Kevin Merrell…..

Bailey, a veteran right-hander, signed a minor-league deal with the Royals in February after having been traded from the Cincinnati Reds to the Los Angeles Dodgers and released in what amounted to a salary dump for the Reds. He was part of the trade that sent Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp to the Reds.

Bailey, 33, has gone 7-6 with a 4.80 ERA in 18 starts this season. In his past six starts, he’s posted a 3-0 record with a 2.83 ERA.

Bailey, a former first-round pick of the Reds who has thrown a pair of no-hitters in his career, has a career record of 74-83 with a 4.58 ERA.

Too bad for Bailey that his first-round pick status was revoked. I'm sure it would have been nice for him to hang on to that distinction.

Kevin Merrell is a 23-year-old hitting .246/.292/.339 in AA who’s never hit more than 2 homers in a pro season and I’m not even mad.

Someone gave up SOMETHING for HOMER BAILEY!!!!!

Merrell apparently is part of KC's plan to hoard all of the players who are fast but can't hit. They are aiming to be contenders again by the mid-1980s.*

*Phase II of the plan involves completing the time machine and stopping to pick up George Brett and Bret Saberhagen along the way.

Or possibly moving back the outfield fences and speeding up the playing surface.

A super-fast guy who can't hit or field does seem like Dayton Moore's particular flavor of catnip.

If Whit Merrifield is available, Adam Engel not only runs, he even fields!

I'm in a breaking group that has nicknamed Kevin Merrell the "bunting dork", based on this baseball card.

The theory is that someone at Bowman does not like him at all.

That is truly a terrible card

I hadn't heard the Great Gazoo signed with the A's.

I like this deal for the A's.
Bailey's been just-OK this season, but the A's could really use that every 5th day, and they got him for basically nothing.
If he's better than just-OK - huge bonus!

Homer Bailey is doing some Homer Bailey things tonight.

When he was knocked out the game Korach (A's radio) said "He's a veteran and he knows how to bounce back from an outing like this" and I barked back at the radio "Yeah, he's had plenty of practice."

Bailey's career is going to go down as one of the stranger ones. This is his 13th season in the majors. He's had a positive WAA in three of them, and an ERA+ over 100 in just two. And he just keeps getting chances

Why not? Every team is going to send a few SPs out there every year who put up an 80-90 ERA+

This seems like the first time in his career where he's got a moderately surprising chance. At first he was a top prospect, he had some good years, and then had a huge contract - all chances that were obviously justifiable.

He has one or two starts a year when he looks like Pedro Martinez and Tom Seaver had a baby. All the rest of his appearances he throws like me.

The strange thing about Bailey is that the Reds gave him a contract which would have been an overpay even had he repeated his best season for every year of the deal. I still remember being totally befuddled by the contract when it was signed.

The Royals have at least one guy (Hunter Dozier) who can hit, but can't run or field. Don't know where he came from, but he's been a fantasy relevation.

I believe that was pretty much everyone's reaction.

Not if you're paying by the no-hitter.
