San Diego Padres acquire All-Star second baseman Adam Frazier from Pittsburgh Pirates, sources say

The San Diego Padres are acquiring second baseman Adam Frazier from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources told ESPN.

Frazier, 29, who leads baseball in hits this year, is not a free agent until after the 2022 season.

In exchange, the Pirates are acquiring right-hander Michell Miliano, shortstop Tucupita Marcano and outfielder Jack Suwinski, a source told ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel.

Frazier entered Sunday hitting .327—the second-best average in Major League Baseball—with four home runs and 32 RBIs.

A 2020 Gold Glove finalist and an All-Star this season, Frazier was the Pirates’ second-longest tenured player, behind right fielder Gregory Polanco.

The Padres' only crap hitter for his position is Hosmer (100 OPS+; C Caratini is a more digestible 87).

10+ games started, infield:

1B - Hosmer 81, Cronenworth 12
2B - Cronenworth 79, Kim 14
3B - Machado 87, Kim 14
SS - Tatis 78, Kim 20

Kim has a terrible 69 OPS+, so he can now safely be removed from the 2B mix.

more interesting if Padres admit their epic blunder that is Hosmer's contract and move Cronenworth there full-time.

Hosmer seems like the dreaded, overrated "veteran presence" that teams hate to bench.

And scooping! Isn't Hosmer rated like the greatest scooper of short throws, like ever?

let's expand this, again 10 Games Started:

LF - Pham 73, Profar 24
CF - Grisham 67, Profar 18, Pham 10
RF - Myers 74, Profar 14

Frazier career is
2B 306, 62 LF, 15 RF

Profar is an 85 OPS+
so he and Kim already have 518 PA (mainly due to injuries) of about 79 OPS+ combined

Kim and Profar are versatile and can be useful in late innings. but they collectively have averaged more Games Started than the Padres have played games.
with Frazier, now when almost anybody gets hurt, you don't have to start offensive black holes anymore

Pittsburgh Pirates: Giving up good players for nothing for over 100 years so that children from Pittsburgh learn to never get attached to anyone or anything.

Does this return feel light? Or am I undervaluing prospects?

Frazier turns 30 in December and last year had a 78 OPS+.

he's having a career-high 129 season to boost the career mark to 105.

Rogers Hornsby is not boarding that flight to San Diego. And while Marcano didn't hit in his coffee cups this year, not many 21-year-olds would.

the Pirates have done worse before, and will again.

The Pirates are reportedly also looking to move closer Richard Rodriguez (Dick-Rod?).

I agree that this feels like a light return, but it wouldn't be a Pirates trade if the Pirates weren't getting ripped off...

Well, the Pirates aren't getting ripped off, they're making money on the deal. It's the fan who get ripped off, as the team trades away (again) popular players who are fun to watch, in spite of the shambles of the team's competitive hopes. At a certain point, the tear downs are not tear downs but basically constantly erasing chalk off a chalkboard. I'm not even asking them to keep all the players, just SOME of them would be great. To be honest, Andrew McCutchen was the end for me. I don't care if he was often injured, he was an awesome person who loved playing in Pittsburgh and had an amazing relationship with the fans. After they let him go, I was basically done with the team after 40+ years of suffering fandom.
