San Diego Padres to acquire Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Joe Musgrove, sources say

The San Diego Padres are in agreement on a deal to acquire right-hander Joe Musgrove from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources tell ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The trade for Musgrove is pending medical reviews, per sources, and will be sending a large package of prospects back to the Pirates. Hudson Head, a well-regarded center fielder, is expected to be among the group heading to Pittsburgh.

Musgrove, 28, was 1-5 with a 3.86 ERA in eight starts for the Pirates in the coronavirus pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

It is a three-team deal. LHP Joey Lucchesi is going to the Mets.

This seems like an awful lot to give up for Joe Musgrove. MLB.com currently has Head as the Padres' #7 which means he was ahead of the guys the Cubs got for Darvish and I think not far behind the top guy in the XXXX deal. The other prospects don't seem too important (Bednar at #20). But Cruz is only 22 and has done very well so far in the low minors. Fellows is out of the 2019 draft (6th round) with no pro experience yet. Head is out of the 3rd round of that draft, turning 20, had a nice rookie league bit in 2019.

Then there's Lucchesi who has 4 service years left and 300 IP of a 95 ERA+. Musgrove has just 500 of a 96 ERA+ and only 2 years control left. Wonder what the Mets are giving up.

but also, how is Joe Musgrove any better than Joey Lucchesi? They're both averagish starters with a few years of team control left.

Word is that Endy Rodriguez is going NYM to PIT. He's a teenage catching prospect with a promising bat. It's early and all, but I'll call the Mets as the winner of this deal. They got a decent starter for a lotto ticket.

By the way XXXX is Snell, I couldn't remember what the other big trade the Padres made was. I recall the main prospect there was Cole Wilcox (the Rays also got Mejia and some bits) who I think was somewhere around 5-6 for the Padres at the time.

Musgrove is one of those guys whose underlying metrics suggest he could have a big breakout.

Beginning to look more and more like a 100+ loss season for the Buccos.
Given that it has been 40+ years since their last WS win, baseball will sink ever lower in fan support behind the Steelers and Penguins.
There was a brief glimmer of hope a few years back, but that is gone now.
Pirates planning to field a AAA team in 2021.
Color me blue.

I'm with Ziggy in #5. I know there are metrics that suggest good things for Musgrove and perhaps bad things for Lucchesi for the future, like #9 says, but San Diego is in a position where they can roll the dice with Lucchesi and go with Mackenzie Gore (or Adrian Morejon or Casey Weathers) if he sucks. Almost seems like they are spending prospect capital just to spend capital.
