San Francisco Giants sign Trevor Rosenthal, who hasn’t pitched in majors since 2020

ight-hander Trevor Rosenthal signed a one-year, $4.5 million contract with the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.

Rosenthal has a chance to pitch in the majors for the first time since 2020. He will be on the injured list with a hamstring strain initially, and manager Gabe Kapler said he’s several weeks away from helping the team.

Kapler called Rosenthal “one of the more effective closers in the game. The talent hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s an electric arm.”

He has the potential to earn an additional $1 million in performance bonuses for big league games pitched: $50,000 each for 15 and 18 games; $150,000 for 23 games; $200,000 for 28 games; $250,000 for 33 games; and $300,000 for 38 games pitched. In addition, Rosenthal also could make $1 million in performance bonuses for games finished: $100,000 for 12 games; $150,000 for 15; and $250,000 each for 18, 21 and 24 games.

TOS seems like something that would keep me from signing people. They never seem to recover well

In 2019 and 2020, Trevor Rosenthal pitched for the Nats, Tigers, Royals and Padres, in that order. He appeared in from 9 to 14 games for each team. His ERAs, in chronological order: 22.74, 7.00, 3.29, 0.00.

He’s getting $4.5 million guaranteed for, at best, maybe 1/3 of the season? That’s insane. A rounding error in the budget, yes, but still insane.

If my math is correct, this year he projects to have an ERA of -3.00.

I don’t believe he’s paid for the games he’s missed, so he gets about one-third of that $4.5M, or about $1.5M. Still, it’s a bit surprising the Giants signed him while he was still rehabbing a hamstring strain that will keep him out of action for several weeks, rather than waiting until he was healthy. Perhaps there was competition for his services?

Rosenthal pitched pretty well in 2020, so I guess while I'm surprised that the Giants signed him to a full year contract mid-year, I'm also kind of surprised he was out of baseball last year.

#5 ... they have to get him into the organization before ... is it still Aug 31? ... for him to be eligible for the playoffs which is presumably what this is all about. Plus the "danger" that another team will sign him while you dither.

Amazingly, in his first 4 appearances with the Nationals in 2019, Rosenthal didn’t retire a single batter, giving up 4 hits, 4 BB & a HBP. In his next two outings, with plenty of rest, he managed to complete an inning each time, giving up an earned run in both, for a less than stellar 40.50 ERA. The scoreboard at Nationals Park computes the pitcher’s ERA in real time, and I was unlucky enough to be present and marvel along with many that his ERA was actually going down during his next disastrous outing in which he gave up 3 runs in but an innings work facing 7 batters.

Light handed? Fight handed? Tight handed? Bright might night or slight handed? There are better things to think about than Trevor's chances to be good again.

He was hurt all year.

He was under contract to the A's for $11m last year.
