Schmidt: Computer strike zone good, but check your hearing

A hot topic all year has been the idea of computerizing the strike zone, the rise of the robot umpires. It’s drawn even more attention here in October — we’ve already seen a perfect example of a missed call when Marcell Ozuna was rung up in the ninth inning of Game 3 between the Cardinals and Braves.

It was obvious, according to the box on the TV screen, that the pitch was clearly inside. It was a pivotal call that could have altered the outcome.

Should the computer zone be perfected, that would never be the case.

It would change the game for the good, it would continue the effort to eliminate human deficiency. We have replay everywhere else in the game, like it or not, replay gets the call right.

In which Mike Schmidt takes a cue from tennis.

The next question is why do you even need an ump behind the catcher - maybe you can simply have another ump make the call or announce balls and strikes through the PA. Getting rid of umps ought to be job 1 of the league

You’ll still need an ump to make calls on plays at the plate, plus occasional things like catcher’s interference, fair/foul bunts, and whether or not a pitch hit the batter, among others.

Not to mention, of course, calling time any and every ####### time a batter decides to call time just to mess with the pitcher. Whatever would the Cardinals do if there wasn’t an umpire back there to do that for them?

So if someone’s got to be back there to do those things, might as well have him announce balls and strikes too, as a nod to tradition if nothing else.

Right. Plus the change to robot umps should be made with as little change as possible in order to gain acceptance. There are going to be people who don't like the automated zone and you don't want to give them more things to add to their list. Get buy in on the automated zone first. Then, when everyone is used to it, start to think about other possible changes.

I would strongly prefer for the umpire to remain back there and to have exclusive access to the reports of the ball/strike machine. Anything else and it's a real slippery slope to the new Taco Bell Crunchy Melty Chalupa Zone hologram communicating the calls.

Slippery with molten "quezo," I would assume.

Assumes facts not in evidence.

I guess I'm becoming an old fogey, because I want to keep human umps
