Sean Murphy heading to Braves

The A’s are sending catcher Sean Murphy to the Braves, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. After multiple teams showed interest in the 2021 Gold Glove-winning backstop, Atlanta came out on top to add another catcher to its roster.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan was first to report the move, and a source told MLB.com’s Martín Gallegos that it will be a three-team deal also involving the Brewers. Milwaukee is reportedly landing catcher William Contreras, per Passan.

Weird trade. Does Atlanta not believe Contreras bat is real?

Murphy is good, but the cost of acquisition for Atlanta is steep. And the return to Oakland seems light.

And that's because Milwaukee swoops in and gets Contreras, Yeager, and Payamps for Esteury Ruiz, who Rickey Hendersoned it up at AA/AAA last year, but otherwise hasn't been good since rookie ball in 2017.

This is a coup, for the middleman.

I hope this means Oakland believes Esteury Ruiz is actually Rickey Henderson, and not just a guy who can do an excellent impression of him way above sea level.

Milwaukee is sending only Ruiz for Contreras plus more?

Milwaukee is sending Ruiz AND 35-year old catcher Manny Pina.

Oakland crushed this trade, cause five players is way more than one player. Soon Oakland will have the most players watching the playoffs on TV of any team.

Seems like the A's got interesting players but wish there was at least one that really hurt for the other teams to give up.

Muller is pretty highly regarded - mlb.com has him as ATL's No. 2 prospect - and starred in AAA this year (3.41 ERA in 23 starts).

is he the Opening Day starter in Oakland?

A's have Shea Langeliers to take over at C, and now Manny Pina to play the role of cagey veteran backup

Someone like William Contreras, you mean?

5–Manny played for Atlanta in 2022

Crew only gave up Ruiz.

Ruiz is an interesting and fun player. Whether he's worth Murphy I don't know, but he'll be fun at least.

I guess OAK really likes Langeliers. If they think he's the future, might as well not block him.

Milwaukee wins the Oak-Atl trade. Another Stearns heist.

Stearns stepped down and just has an advisory role. But yes, seems like a pretty big win for MIL. ATL gets better too, and it didn't cost that much.

Are the Braves gonna trade D'Arnaud now?
   16. The Duke Posted: December 12, 2022 at 07:33 PM (#6109278)
He's still on the payroll - this is a classic play. I'm sure he was all over this. And since he's going to the Mets next year, helping rid the Braves of a lot of talent isn't bad

That should be Cole Irvin.

EDIT: If he isn't traded before then.

I'm guessing this trade is all about who can throw out Trea Turner.

A's have so far signed or traded for Jace Peterson, Aledmys Diaz, and Esteury Ruiz. The new market inefficiency must be utility infielders.

I just dawned on me today....but, Sean Murphy if he doesn't deliver big may get the same treatment Von Hayes did with the Phillies decades ago and get called 5:1 or whatever. I don't get this trade for ATL. I'd have kept Contreras. But, maybe he calls a shitty game or something.

Looking at the catcher contracts vs the pitching contracts it seems the pitching are way more bloated than the catchers. It might be that the market for pitching prospects is more than all of the prospect lists give credit for.

what do we know about Murphy's defense? He won a GG last year but this year DRS has him down (-4 I think). Is this a small sample size issue? A catcher framing issue? what?

Fangraphs thinks he's fantastic, BRef not.

Trading a 24 year-old All Star catcher seems wack to me, but Anthopolous has certainly earned some benefit of the doubt.
