Seattle Mariners acquire Jake Bauers from Cleveland Indians

The Seattle Mariners have acquired first baseman Jake Bauers from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named or cash considerations, it was announced Thursday.

Bauers, who had been designated for assignment by Cleveland, has started 25 of the 43 games in which he’s appeared for the Indians this season, batting .190 with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs.

He was given Cleveland’s starting job despite being outplayed by Bobby Bradley in training camp because he was out of minor league options. Bradley has been recalled.

Bauers is in the Mariners’ lineup for Thursday’s game in Detroit, and he’ll be back in Cleveland on Friday when Seattle opens a three-game series.

In three major league seasons, Bauers has a .211 average with 25 home runs and 97 RBIs. He did not play for the Indians in 2020, spending the abbreviated season at the club’s alternate training site.

The Mariners trading for an Indians first baseman, what could go wrong?

Asbrudal Cabrera and Shin-Soo Choo. Not one, but two of the worst trades in Mariners history, made with the same team, for two first baseman, within a month. The nadir of the Bill Bavasi era...

I enjoyed this answer from Dan Szymborski’s chat today in Fangraphs:

Sharps: Is the Jake Bauers trade the beginning of Cleveland throwing in the towel?

Dan Szymborski: At this point, one could argue that *acquiring and playing* Jake Bauers is throwing in the towel

The Mariners as a team have a triple slash line of .209/.286/.366. That's the kind of line a guy like Royce Clayton could get away with by playing a good defensive short stop, but that's the line the Mariners have as a team!

#2: That was a weird question to start with. Pretty much by definition, any player good enough to represent towel-throwing is a player too good to DFA -- you trade him. Replacing a dead weight with ... a guy hitting 196/266/485 at AAA might be throwing in the towel. :-) (He was better in 2019 ... if not playing real baseball hurt anybody in 2020, Bradley is a prime candidate.)

This seems like one of those deals where if Jake Bauers is the answer, you ain't asking the right question type of thing.
