Seattle Mariners’ Hector Santiago first player to be ejected amid MLB’s crackdown; veteran reliever claims ‘all I used was rosin’

Seattle Mariners pitcher Hector Santiago was ejected in the fifth inning of Sunday’s doubleheader opener against the Chicago White Sox after umpires inspected his glove. But the veteran claims he used only rosin on what was a humid day.

“He [umpire Phil Cuzzi] said he felt some sticky stuff on the inside of the glove,” Santiago said after the Mariners’ 3-2 victory. “All I used was rosin. I used it on both sides, trying to keep that sweat from dripping down to the hands.”

Santiago, 33, was pulled from the game after giving up two walks and two hits in the inning. A major leaguer with 10 years of service time, he was in his third inning of work, but was checked for the first time when the confiscation occurred.

Per the league’s new rule on inspecting pitchers for foreign substances, Santiago handed his glove over to be inspected by Cuzzi, who ejected him moments later. From replays, it looked as though the umpires were checking the inside of Santiago’s glove.

“What we do is we go around the whole glove, feeling for anything that would be sticky or something,” crew chief Tom Hallion said. “It was very noticeable, and then the rest of the crew inspected to make sure we were all in agreement. All four agreed that it was a sticky substance and that’s why he was ejected.”

This is officially ridiculous.

And if it turns out to be rosin and sweat?

#1, The explanation or the fact it's happening?

We're going to have a World Series game turn on one of these, aren't we?

“feeling for anything sticky or something”

Don’t worry guys, the umps have got this.

One report I saw said that pitchers are allowed to have rosin on their pitching hand, but not the glove or glove hand. If that’s why Santiago was ejected then the rules are asinine.

If we're whining about what the umps did, what is the proposed solution? I hope it isn't "just let the pitchers keep doing whatever they want". We will wind up with what the NFL had in the 70s/80s, where everyone felt they had to out-steroid the other guys.

Presumably, MLB says, 'Eh, no harm, no foul."

It's not as if he was ejected from a game he was playing in. He had already been taken out.

I think you guys are being a little credulous about all of this. When a pitcher caught with a sticky substance claims he's not cheating, my first thought isn't "Gee, I guess he wasn't cheating." It's "Tell me another one, hoss."

Yes, but it'll be Clayton Kershaw getting ejected, so it means the Dodgers will actually win the game.

(Sure, I know he was good in last year's WS. I'm just having a little fun here.)

I'm waiting for a manager in the World Series to send out a lefty-specialist reliever, let him get the first (left-handed) batter out, and then when he has to face two right-handed batters, ask the umpire to check his own pitcher's glove immediately for "foreign substance". The umps find it, toss the reliever out of the game, and the manager can put in a RHP and successfully get around the 3-batter rule.

#12 A variation on the game managers played under the first set of no betting rules. No substitutions permitted without permission from the other team ... unless a player was tossed for betting on the game. (No organized leagues at this point so the only penalty for betting on the game was expulsion from the game)

And he gets paid during his suspension. So instead of hiding a pitcher on the IL, just get him tossed for sticky stuff. (I kid.)

Players serving foreign substance suspensions still count toward the 25 & 40-man rosters.
