Julio Rodriguez continued to strengthen his rookie of the year campaign with another big accomplishment Wednesday, stealing his 25th stolen base of the season to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 6-1 victory over the San Diego Padres, securing a key two-game split.
Rodríguez was hit by a pitch by San Diego starter Mike Clevinger and increased his season’s stolen base total to 25 in the fifth inning, making him the third rookie in league history to have at least 25 steals and 25 homers in their first season. But unlike Chris Young in 2007 and Mike Trout in 2012, Rodriguez reached the 25/25 plateau in his debut season. Both Young and Trout reached in the majors late in the previous season, but were still considered rookies.
“I don’t see myself as a rookie. I see myself as a player like anybody else and I’m just happy that I’m being able to deliver for the team any time,” Rodriguez said.

1. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: September 14, 2022 at 11:30 PM (#6096197)Rodriguez: 5.5 WAR in 125 games
Rutschman: 4.5 WAR in 94 games
Can we delete this spammer from the rolls? Who is a system administrator these days?
Barring some kind of legendary performance by Rutschman over the last 20 games, I'd say Rodriguez is a lock.
A near-6-WAR season---a full 1.0 WAR ahead of the next-best guy---with 25hr/25sb while playing CF will be tough to beat no matter the playing-time difference.
Plus, the O's have been 59-43 since Rutschman came up, compared to 16-24 before that. I doubt if that's entirely a coincidence.
And Rutschman's 53/68 BB/K ratio is a lot more impressive than Rodriguez's 39/140. How many rookies (or veterans) these days have that level of plate discipline?
Considering Rodriguez is the best player on a team going to the playoffs for the first time in 2,700 years, I'm not sure Rutschman is going to get any bonus points on that count.
Again, I'm not saying that Rutschman's more ROYworthy than Rodriguez, just that objectively they're about equally valuable.
But one minor quibble: The Mariners made the playoffs in 32 AD and celebrated with a scandalous pagan ritual, after which The Curse of Jesus doomed them to Eternal Postseason Failure. That was only 1,990 years ago, not 2,700.
Anyone who thinks Julio isn’t winning the actual ROY this year? Just clearly wrong.
Which is great, but is that really important for trying to compare their actual results this year?
Or maybe it actually is Matt Wieters because according to BP, Wieters could create a wormhole and travel through time.
