Seattle Mariners sign Justin Upton

Looking to boost their lineup, the Seattle Mariners signed veteran slugger Justin Upton to a one-year contract Saturday.

Upton, a four-time All-Star, was released by the Los Angeles Angels on April 8 heading into the final season of a $106 million, five-year guaranteed contract. Seattle must pay him only a prorated share of the $700,000 major league minimum.

The 34-year-old Upton batted .211 with 17 home runs, 41 RBI and a .705 OPS in 89 games for the Angels last season.

The top pick in the 2005 amateur draft, Upton is a .262 career hitter with 324 homers, 1,000 RBI, 151 stolen bases and an .814 OPS in 15 major league seasons with Arizona, Atlanta, San Diego, Detroit and the Angels. He has won three Silver Slugger Awards.

The outfielder will report to extended spring training with the Mariners in Peoria, Arizona. Once he’s ready, Upton could be a candidate to plug a hole for Seattle at designated hitter.

Not a good sign for Kelenic.

Uptown won’t block Kelenic. Pitchers won’t stop Kelenic.

Kelenic’s battles are all between him and himself.

Now, the Upton signing should by all rights end Souza’s career.

Still kind of surprised he didn't end up in Boston, but can't really fault Bloom's "why sign Upton when Franchy Cordero is in your system" logic.

Every year I hear that this is finally the year Dipoto builds a playoff team and each year the team seems like it underperforms. How long does Dipoto have? He's had 7 years now, isn't that enough time to build a sustainable playoff profile?

I like Franchy, but Upton is a RH bat, which they might feel they need? And for the minimum? Why not?

Whatshisname #1 ... Dallas McPherson. Whatshisname #2 is a bit tricker but I'll go with Wily Mo Pena.

Red Sox RH bats...Bogaerts, JD, Story....then Arroyo.....then Kiké....then Vazquez................................................then Dalbec.

I guess Arroyo has the potential to be as good as Upton might be for Seattle.

nah, #1 can't be mcpherson. i'm pretty sure it's joel guzman.

#2 might be pena, but i think it's more likely to be grant desme.

Remember the good old days when the argument was that Kelenic was clearly the better prospect than Julio because Kelenic would stick at CF(and hit for more power)?

He does have more time, but he also needs a hitting coach who can tell him to stick with one stance (maybe from last fall), and just enjoy trying to get a hit or two.
