Sinclair raising $250M for new sports streaming service, sources say

Sinclair Broadcast Group is quietly raising money for a new service that would stream games by the St. Louis Cardinals, the Dallas Mavericks and scores of other popular sports teams to fans over the Internet, The Post has learned.

The publicly traded media company — which owns exclusive rights to broadcast games for dozens of Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association and National Hockey League teams — is working with investment bank LionTree to raise more than $250 million for the venture, according to two sources with knowledge of the plans.

Sinclair has been telling hedge funds and other potential investors that it aims to charge $23 a month to fans who want to stream games in markets where it owns sports broadcasting rights, sources said.

Fans who live outside of Sinclair’s 21 territories, where it owns broadcasting rights tied to 42 teams, would likely be out of luck.

If you live in a 3 sport city and can get your baseball/basketball/hockey teams for $23 a month through this streaming service, I could see that being worth it for some people who aren't interested in other live, non-antenna tv options. I don't know how many, though.

I pay around $200 a year Canadian for Sportsnet here in Canada to get the Jays games - plus a fair number of Raptors and quite a few NHL games plus other assorted sports (golf, etc.). I got it 99% for the Jays (MLB.tv was showing Jay games up until this year, but now I'd need to use a VPN to see them with it). So far so good but the greedy jerks only allow one stream (so I can't have 2 sports on at once) and the app is poor quality imo (crashes now and then and logs me right out sometimes at random).

They couldn't pay me enough to watch one minute of this if it's going to be as littered with gambling ads as the cable network. Still probably wouldn't get it regardless because F**k Sinclair on general principle.

For people in Southern California, Sinclair won't get you the Lakers or Dodgers. That doesn't seem remotely worth it at all.

The St. Louis Cardinals and Dallas Mavericks don't seem to be a good example of teams of equal popularity. Next up, "the New York Yankees, the Cincinnati Bengals and scores of other popular sports teams."

It’s Sinclair. They’ll cut into the game-winning play to have Sebastian Gorka come on your screen and explain how the founding fathers wanted the US to be authoritarian. And all sports reporters will have to parrot right wing talking points cooked up in the home office.
