Six players inducted into National Baseball Hall of Fame

Six players were inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday, marking the 78th such class of inductees in MLB history. Following their election to the Hall in December and January, Mike Mussina, Harold Baines, Edgar Martinez, Lee Smith, and Mariano Rivera accepted the honor among an impressive gathering of their peers, while Brandy Halladay accepted the award on behalf of her late husband, Roy.

Mussina, 50, received 76.7% of the votes needed for induction in his sixth year on the ballot. Over an 18-year career split between the Orioles and Yankees, the right-hander was decorated with five All-Star designations and seven Gold Gloves, and led the league with 19 pitching wins in 1995. He capped his lengthy list of accomplishments in 2008, finishing with a career 270-153 record and a 3.68 ERA, 2,813 strikeouts, and 82.8 WAR.

During his induction speech, Mussina reminisced about his childhood memories of whiffle ball and Little League before launching into a few anecdotes from his career in Baltimore and New York.

An open thread, for discussion of any interesting elements of the Hall of Fame weekend.

Name the player who was teammates with all 6 inductees?

David Segui comes close, but he was never on the Yankees.

Arthur Rhodes was also never on the Yankees.

The '94 Orioles featured Baines, Mussina, and Smith --

Am I the only one who thinks Mussina's likeness on his plaque looks uncommonly terrible?

I think they all look fairly bad except for Mo.

Now, the hard part begins... given Smith's 'C' on the cap - lots of wrestling with whether to remember the good parts and forgiving the bad part.

Wow. 3 games with the 94 Orioles gets him Baines, Mussina, and Smith. 9 games with the 03 Yankees gets him Rivera. He then moves to the 03 Mariners where his 15 games gets him Edgar. Finally, the last 8 games of his carer were with the 08 Blue jays where he gets Halladay. He was with Baines for the entire 95 season, and Mussina through 98 and then on the 03 Yankees, but the other 4 were just the brief stops mentioned.

Ripken too, so they had four Hall of Famers and couldn't even reach the postseason....

I recall a lil sumpin about a strike...

Looked up Benitez, listed at 6'4, 180. That must have been his weight when he signed at age 18. Probably 70 pounds short of his lightest playing weight.

I didn't make it this year, but for once the weather wasn't oppressive. At least on Sunday. Anyone walking around town on Saturday would be another story.

94 Orioles were a good team, just a few games back of the wild card when the strike hit. Would have been in position for WC2 under today's rules. Many of the top players from the 96-97 playoff teams were there in 94 as well (Ripken/Palmeiro/Mussina/Brady).
