With Jo Adell in LF

Trout-Marsh-Adell is supposed to the outfield of the next good Angels team. We'll see how that goes.

It took me quite a few minutes to remember why MLB was hyping Dodgers-Astros as a rivalry.

Miguel Cabrera hit his 498th home run tonight.

Well, that first inning as a Cardinal for Jon Lester went about as could be expected.

5-0 Braves after one half inning.

He tormented the Cardinals as a Red Sock, he tormented the Cardinals as a Cub, and now he's tormenting the Cardinals as a Cardinal.

As if he's not satisfied with having the team's hottest/best current hitter (leads team in OBP, SLG, OPS obv.) bat behind Yadier Molina in the latter part of the order, Shildt has gone a step further by moving the usual No. 7-8 hitter (Edman, .304 OBP) to leadoff, and dropping everyone else down a spot in the order.

I know batting order supposedly doesn't matter, but I'm sorry, just as a reflection of competence, or some kind of defensible rationale, it does.

a concerned owner checks in on the self-immolating Mets:

Steven Cohen
Keep me up on the game. I’m out at dinner with @sophiarosecohen. Game doesn’t look good from a distance. We have to get our act together soon.

And now Lester gives up another homer in the 2nd. I don't know how a carcass can help stabilize a rotation, unless it's as fertilizer.

Jo Adell with a walk and a stolen base, then a 2-run double. Nice return to the bigs so far!

This Red Sox strategy of SP giving up 3/4 runs in the first 4/5 innings, hoping for the pen to give up 1 run or less, then for the hitters to somehow cobble together 5 runs is a good strategy moving forward. Worked ok so far; for the rest of the season...I'm not convinced.

With Gerrit Cole & Jordan Montgomery testing positive for Covid, the Yankees are a bit short on starting pitching. However, once again, the Magic of Pinstripes™️ saves the day, as emergency call-up Luis Gil (5.83 ERA @ AAA) has tossed 6 shutout innings, while the revived bats have given the Yankee a 9-0 lead. Granted, it’s against the Orioles, but it still counts.

the Magic of Pinstripes™️

Checks yesterday's box, not so much magic then mate.

Yankees bring in another emergency call-up, Stephen Ridings to follow Luis Gill, and he tosses a scoreless 7th, striking out 3. He apparently spent the Covid year working out in one of the pitching labs, and now often tops 100 MPH. He’s another giant Yankee, 6’8”, 220 lbs.

For the 8th inning, the Yankees have yet another emergency call-up pitcher making his MLB debut, Brody Koerner. Is 3 in a game a record? Maybe for a non-September call-ups game?

collapsing Mets fight to within 5-4, 2 outs, tying run at second.

up comes Drury - 8 for 16 as a PH, 3 HR, 3 2B, 2 1B, 7 RBI.

and he rips the first pitch down the left field line to..... and it's foul by a foot so no tie game. then the inevitable feeble grounder to short ends it.

lead down to 1.5 games, smallest edge since May 26, they tell me.

it was a good run. it was never a great run. but it was... meh, an ok run

Katie Sharp
Luis Gil is the first Yankee with 6+ IP, 0 runs and 6+ K in his MLB debut since Tacks Neuer on August 28, 1907

Jo Adell with a bases loaded RBI single. Two hits, three RBI in his return to the bigs. They're out of the race, but the Angels are still interesting to watch right now.

Braves haven't had a winning or losing streak in 18 games and have a +35 run differential in that span.
