Source: Jurickson Profar, San Diego Padres agree to 3-year, $21 million deal

Jurickson Profar and the San Diego Padres are in agreement on a three-year, $21 million contract, a source familiar with the deal told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Profar continues to show his versatility at a true utilityman, having played five defensive positions for the Padres last season while seeing most of his action in left field and at second base. He hit a career-high .278 with 7 home runs and 25 RBIs in 56 games during the pandemic-shortened season.

The 27-year-old Profar continues to get on track offensively as he gets more playing time, something he didn’t have during his first six years after the top prospect was called up by the Texas Rangers in 2012. He got off to a horrible start during the 2020 season, but compiled an .879 OPS over the final 43 games, hitting .331.

The Padres seem to think we'll get the DH in the NL this year.

Dang, the Padres are really not leaving anything to chance in 2021.

Dammit. I wouldn't have minded the Red Sox getting him at all.

I like that deal for the Padres a lot. Versatility is becoming more and more important in today's game with the rosters such as they are. $7 million a year isn't that much these days and he's good enough that I'd expect him to be worth that money comfortably for the Pads.

Are they using a 55-man roster?

I was thinking more like 2/$12, but he's young, and they have the financial flexibility.

Not seeing it. Profar played a good bit of 2B and LF, and a few innings elsewhere as well. Don't see his signing as anything indicating a DH signing or pushing anyone into a DH like role.

That seems like a lot of money, did he fix his throwing issues at second base last year? On the A's he was scary to watch throwing one hoppers on routine grounders to 2B.

Not all of them are full time players, but they already have two second-basemen and two starting corner outfielders.

Only spent 17 games there, he played mostly LF.

Seems a year too long but (#5) he is young. The bat seems to have come around (2.9 oWAR per 650 the last 3 years) but the IF defense seems poor. That 100-105ish OPS+ is fine for a 4th OF but a player like that only has "big" value if he can play IF too. He is a BHB with no substantial platoon split and has reasonable experience at 1B so that's handy in mixing and matching. Certainly a useful guy to have around, just not the type that usually gets 3 years.

Versatility is becoming more and more important in today's game with the rosters such as they are.

It became a little less important with the 26th roster spot and the 13-pitcher limit. We're back to where you can carry a backup C, 2 backup IF and 2 backup OF. If the NL DH becomes permmanent, the usefulness of versatility will go up a bit but it's no longer the case that a competent 2B/3B/OF is nearly a requirement. (Still useful obviously.)

He projects as a 1.6 WAR player. The contract covers ages 28-30. Plays multiple positions and switch hits. He is a useful player worth this amount of money.

Profar strikes me as someone who could have a late-prime breakout like Tony Phillips. If that happens, 3/21 is a bargain.

What Krushin said. Profar was unwatchable with the A's. Seemed like a nice guy though, always a big smile.

Profar can opt out after either 2021 or 2022 so it will be hard for the deal to go 3 years AND be a bargain. If he can keep his rates at his 2020 level then this is likely a 1/$7M deal. It would still be a bargain, but there isn’t as much possible upside due to the opt outs.
