Source: (Pedro) Martinez talking to Marlins

Pedro Martinez and the Florida Marlins are believed to be in the beginning stages of negotiating a contract and could meet next week, a source told ESPNdeportes.com Saturday night.

Florida does make sense even though they are cheap. Maybe they think he’ll be something of a drawcard and he shouldn’t command a big contract.

No more than Dennis Eckersley Part II does.

Or Jose Canseco Part II or Rickey Henderson Part III/IV.

Or Keith Foulke Part II or Jason Giambi Part II. Or Jay Witasick or Steve Karsay Part II. Or Tony Phillips Part II.

Shannon Stewart. Someone must have mentioned Ron Gant, right? Tom Candiotti. Bip Roberts.

....Kevin Mitchell!

Steve Sparks and Scott Sauerbeck and Mark Guthrie are kinda stretching it, I suppose.

Also with the A's, you get a couple of fun "remember when they played there types" recently with Johnny Damon and Ray Durham. And as for a "he started his career where?" guy, you have Tony Batista.

edit: Danny Tartabull, too, kinda. Heh, and Steve Sax.

Interpretation: Pedro is desperate for Omar's attention, so he's flirting with the Marlins to get noticed.

It looks like the rumor was already basically shot down as bogus today.

I totally don't remember Dennis Eckersley paying for the Red Sox in 1998...

Speaking of Danny Tartabull, don't forget his seven hitless at-bats with the Phillies.

I see your Shannon Stewart and raise you Rob Butler. I'd add Pat Hentgen, but his second run with the Jays was memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Randall Simon's time with the Phillies put Danny Tartabull's time with the Phillies to shame.

Jerry Rice: Raider, Seahawk, Bronco was.

Rice was on the Seahawks and Broncos!?

Do you guys think that Pedro really turned down a 1y/7m dollar offer from an AL club? I want him back for sentimental and mostly irrational reasons but that's far too much money to guarantee him. It'd be a mistake to guarantee him that much.

I don't think any Part IIs count for this kind of team. Maybe for their own separate teams. (Great Part IIs, Horrible Part IIs, Short Part IIs, Long Part IIs.)

Rice was on the Broncos in the preseason, but got cut before he appeared in a regulation game with them. He actually played with the Seahawks in 11 games during the 2004 season.

In fact, now that I look it up, Rice played in 17 games in 2004, thanks to the vagaries of the bye week. That would give him another record: Most games played, season.

Rice didn't really get cut exactly. Shanahan basically said he could stay as the 4th reciever (basically just sit on the bench) which was widely viewed as his way of telling Rice that he didn't make the team without embarassing him. Classy move by Shanahan.

That wasn't fun.
