Source: Travis Shaw, Blue Jays have 1-year, $4M deal

Travis Shaw and the Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a one-year, $4 million contract, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The source said the deal includes $675,000 in performance bonuses.

The deal ends up creating a swap of infielders between the Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers, who signed Justin Smoak to a one-year, $5 million contract last week.

MLB Network first reported on Shaw’s agreement with the Blue Jays.

So, do we think that Shaw will return to his 2017/2018 level, stay at his 2019 level, or end up somewhere in between?

THis means the Jays will have an all sons-of-MLBers infield next year, with Shaw at 1B, Biggio at 2B, Bichette at SS, and Guerrero at 3B.

Has he hit a high fastball yet?

Is Travis the son of Jeff? I didn't know that.

I didn't know that either. The others are obvious. Cavan is a multi-position player like his dad, though hasn't been a catcher, and looks to settle in at 2B. Bo and Dante don't play the same position, but there aren't any other Bichettes in MLB. Vlad may not play the same position as dad, but the Vladiness is obvious.

I wouldn't have guessed on Shaw since a relief pitcher and a corner infielder hardly even seem to register as being the same species to me.

May I introduce you to the LaRoche clan?

Anyway, I thought Shaw was one of the more interesting and difficult tender decisions -- 8 WAR 2017-18, -1 in 2019, probably wouldn't have gotten any more than $5 in arb. But that 2019 really kills even his simple Marcel projection down to 1.4 WAR (Steamer 1.3) -- which I guess would be OK for $4 M with the chance of a 3-4 WAR season as long as you are willing to cut bait quickly if he's toast.

I'd missed the Smoak signing -- similar issues as Shaw but less extreme ... 6 WAR 2017-18 and 0.6 in 2019, 1.7 Marcel WAR, 1.0 Steamer. He's probably a slightly safer bet than Shaw but I might have preferred Thames at $7.5.

I'm not sure they're making themselves better but I am concerned that the Brewers are making a lot of small moves while the Cubs have done nothing.

6: agree on Shaw - had wondered if their decision would signal how confident we should be that TS could return to form. That said, his new deal is worth only a little less than his arb projection.

Any chance that Shaw plays 3B? He's very good there, and Guerrero not so much. Might as well move baby Vlad to 1B now? That's almost certainly their best defensive lineup.

And the Gordons, Tom and Dee.
I think most father-son combos are either both position players or both pitchers. Crossovers are unusual. Pudge and Derek Rodriguez are another contemporary example.

Conveniently, they’re all right here in the clubhouse.

They are all sons-of-multiple-all-star-appearance-MLBers.

Jeff Shaw: 2x
Craig Biggio: 7x
Dante Bichette: 4x
Vlad Guerrero: 9x

I'd forgotten he quit because they no longer would allow his son in the clubhouse. That was some admirable stuff right there.
