Source: Yankees re-signing Anthony Rizzo on multi-year deal

Anthony Rizzo is re-signing with the New York Yankees on a multi-year deal, a source told ESPN’s Jesse Rogers on Tuesday.

Rizzo had become a free agent after declining his $16 million option with the Yankees for 2023.

Acquired from the Chicago Cubs at the 2021 trade deadline, Rizzo returned to New York for the 2021 season on a deal that paid $16 million this year.

He hit 32 home runs for the fourth time in his career—he has never hit more—and had 75 RBIs in 130 games despite a .224 batting average. The 33-year-old was sidelined between Aug. 31 and Sept. 18 by back pain and headaches from an epidural injection to treat his back.

Makes sense for the Yanks. They still need to sign Judge, add a really good bat in the OF, and ditch Donaldson.

Now onto Judge

He's 33. How long is the "multi"?

Ah, I see in the tweet it's two years. That's not unreasonable.

Anthony Rizzo truly enjoyed being a Yankee, and getting $20 million a year to stay—$17 million each of the next two years, plus a $6 million buyout on a 2025 option—keeps him in the Bronx.

Small nit-pick, but he's not actually getting $20M a year. He's getting $17M a year for 3 years or $20M for two. He only gets $20M if he's crappy enough that he's not worth $11M in the 3rd year.

The $40M guaranteed is a bit better than the $36M/2 years predicted by MLB Trade Rumors, although all 4 of their analysts were correct that he’d re-sign with the Yankees. That’s also their prediction for Aaron Judge, but for considerably more money ($332M).

FG had him at 2/32, crowdsource 3/54

This is one of those deals where it's hard to see why this wasn't wrapped up before it ever became a thing. He wanted a little better than the 2/$32 option, the Yanks were willing to go a little better. The difference between 2/$32 and 2/$40 or 3/$51 is so small that it could have been done by Cashman and Rizzo over a coffee at any point in the last 3 months.
