Sources: Astros witnesses admit sign stealing to MLB, but deny special camera | SNY

Believing that other teams used technology to decode signs, a group of Houston Astros asked the organization for access to a live feed from a centerfield camera in 2017.

They did not install a new camera for sign-stealing purposes, and the players and coaches involved did not even know which camera the feed was coming from. They wanted a monitor closer to the dugout, because their video room was too far away. They considered their actions to be in line with industry standards.

The above narrative represents the picture painted by some of the interviews conducted by MLB investigators this fall, according to sources with direct knowledge of the investigation. The league has already spoken with nearly 60 people, and SNY can now report some of what they have learned.

The overall picture painted by these sources is one that shows the Astros breaking rules, but not going so far as to install a camera specifically for sign stealing.

That’s no defense at all - it’s like saying you didn’t buy a new gun to commit the murder, just used one you already had. The camera isn’t the problem, it’s the live feed to the dugout area.

I dont even understand what these advance stories or leaks are supposed to be telling us. They wanted a monitor closer to the dugout, cause...why? How does that prevent sign stealing. Cause I guess that's the ostenstible purpose of the camera. The Astros are telling us they didnt install the camera to steal signs. Right? THey saw opponents steal their signs so they installed a camera...So that's to prevent sign stealing???

Well no, I guess that's not what its saying. Its saying the original purpose of the unnamed camera was for advance scouting or some league approved purpose. And that it didnt start out for sign stealing purposes BUt obviously something changed down the road and Then it was for sign stealing?

Its like bits and drabs of this story are being leaked out, but the morsels they give us dont really make sense in terms of the big picture. It sounds like someone is explaining the original purpose of the camera and somehow this is getting spun into: "we didndt do it to steal signs...? BUt there's no real explanation.

I dunno maybe someone else can decipher this better.

ANd why does it need to be closer to the dugout again?

The constant theme you get from reporting including the Athletic and especially everyone looking to absolve the Astros is that “everyone else was doing it “ yet there is no evidence of it and the commissioner himself said that the Astros are the only team they are looking at. The most telling anecdote was the story that the Nats were being contacted from everyone around the league about how to avoid the Astros stealing their signs

This is an Astros problem, pure and simple.

#3 ... they are going for the difference between planning a heist (casing the joint, drawing out who goes where, etc.) vs. coming in, finding nobody at the counter and the cash register open. They're claiming they didn't go to any extra trouble to steal signs -- no special cameras, monitor close to the dugout just to save going to the video room -- which I suppose is somewhat more consistent with "everybody does it, nothing special." It's a pointlessly thin defense but, as noted, this much is already out there so there's not much point in denying it either. The "video room too far" excuse is particularly egregious -- if the video room had been close enough to cheat from there, we never would have needed that monitor.
