Sources: Correa switches agents; A-Rod advised

Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa is in the process of switching agents, following the advice of Alex Rodriguez and joining the powerful WME agency in spite of it not having a baseball business, sources familiar with the move told ESPN.

Correa, 24, left longtime agent Greg Genske for WME and agent Jon Rosen, who represents Rachael Ray, Bobby Flay and Al Roker as the head of WME’s Branded Lifestyle Group. Rosen recently sought certification from the Major League Baseball Players Association, according to sources.

Correa will sign a ten-year, $300 million deal with Guy's Grocery Games.

I find this interesting, it seems like he has aspirations/ambitions other than playing baseball. Carlos Correa is a super-smart dude, was valedictorian of his high school class and has always idolized Derek Jeter, so I'm sure he is following Jeter's new career. IIRC from reading Astroball, he even learned to speak English because he wanted to be as appealable as his hero.

This probably doesn’t matter, but it kind of feels like he is trying to transition to mainstream celebrity 10 years too soon.

I dunno about "too soon," the firm can start laying down the groundwork right now and build relationships and all that. And if he gets hurt or sucks his way out of baseball in the near future, he'll have those resources waiting for him.

If he gets hurt or sucks his way out of baseball soon why would the mainstream care about him? I guess if WME can deliver that then they are earning their money, but it seems unlikely.

He doesn't have to be mainstream in a Brad Pitt kind way, he can still get the usual talking head sports gigs and find other ways to build his brand. A smart guy like Carlos Correa is going to have a lot of options when his playing days are done, he's just setting himself up for that.

He proposed to his fiancee (Miss Texas 2016, not to be confused with the reigning Miss Puerto Rico of the same name) on "national TV" (the Steve Harvey show ... does that count?) and they have dogs named Groot and Rocket ... so I'm thinking he's been working on his image for a while. She also has her own YouTube channel ... though oddly not a wiki page apparently. That wedding seems long in the planning.

valedictorian of his high school class

He did get a 1560 on his SAT (per Wiki) so he's obviously more intelligent than your average player but that high school was the PR Baseball Academy which I am guessing does not gather the brightest young minds in Puerto Rico.

Between 2005 and 2015 (a period that includes when Carlos would have taken the test) it was scored on a 2400-point scale. Now, a 1560 would still be ~59th percentile, but it's not the 1560 of today or pre-2005 (99.8 percentile). That said, it still likely means he's more intelligent than your average player.

You could say he's putting the cart before the horse...
