Sources: D-Backs expected to name Brent Strom as pitching coach

The Diamondbacks are on the verge of hiring Brent Strom as their new pitching coach, a source said Friday, a move that would give them a highly respected instructor at a time when the organization is desperate to improve its run prevention.

Strom, who turned 73 last month, spent the past eight seasons with the Houston Astros, helping shape a staff that succeeded year in and year out with pitchers both young and old. Over that span, the Astros ranked fifth in the majors in earned run average, winning a title in 2017 and reaching the World Series two other times.

Good round of hiring for the Dbacks.

Adding Joe Mather as hitting coach, and Banister as bench coach were solid hires

That, and getting Dave McKay back who missed last year due to lacerated spleen will upgrade the coaching staff

I was surprised to read Strom is 73. Turns out I had his career misplaced by 20+ years. I thought he was one of those mediocre 90s starters but he was a mediocre 70s starter. Not sure why I remember his name at all frankly -- he never did anything of note, wasn't around long, played for the Padres -- even WGN usually skipped one Cubs at Padres series per year.
