Sources: Detroit Tigers hiring San Francisco Giants GM Scott Harris as president of baseball operations

The Detroit Tigers are hiring San Francisco Giants general manager Scott Harris as their new president of baseball operations, sources told ESPN on Monday.

Harris’ rise in the industry has been meteoric and he’s been seen as a future front-office star.

The Tigers have a lot of good young pitching and some star-level positional talent. Their lack of a step forward this year led to the firing of longtime general manager Al Avila last month.

Harris joins manager A.J. Hinch and assistant general managers Sam Menzin, Jay Sartori and David Chadd to form the new Tigers’ brain trust.

(Wayne and Garth do their "diddle-liddle-luh" bit and wave their hands, signifying a flashback...)

"Dang it! We just lost the 2012 World Series to the Giants! Now what?"

"Why don't we have a few more good years, then get rid of all of our good players and play like absolute dogsh!t for half a decade, then finally hire the Giants [future] GM to run our baseball operations in 2022?"

"That's so crazy...it just might work...!"

(Theme music, up and out)

I'd love to know who these "star-level" position players are, and why don't any of them have an OPS+ over 100.

#3 At 22 Spencer Torkelson has put up the impressive line of .291/.310/.600

Now granted it would be more positive if that was a BA/OBP/SLG line, but it is impressive that a starting 1B puts up a 600 OPS.

Riley Green is 21, playing CF and is nearly a league average hitter. Kerry Carpenter is 24, really hit in AAA and has a 124 OPS+ on limited time in the majors.

Akil Badoo is 23 and has an excellent shot at being 24 next year.

Seriously, he does appear to have reasonable strike zone judgement and some speed (not plus, plus speed though). I'd bet against him turning this into a meaningful career though.

Star? Depends on the league. They have some guys who could probably dominate at AA.

I live in SF and I have never heard of Scott Harris. I thought Farhan was the Giants' GM.

Farhan is club president, but he effectively runs the team. This is all part of the title inflation around baseball, and why the Tigers named Harris as their Club President rather than GM (he will hire his own GM)

FYI, Riley Greene has an OPS+ of...101!

Ha ha! Checkmate, atheists!

Riley Greene will be a great player and a multiple-time All-Star; he reminds me so much of young Andrew McCutchen. The others.... yuck.

Fun fact: Tarik Skubal, who's been shut down already, leads the Tigers with 117.2 innings pitched. This would be the fewest in MLB history by a team leader in a full-length season.
