Sources: Giants down to three candidates in search for new manager

SAN FRANCISCO—A year ago, Larry Baer and the Giants ownership group had to wait until the end of the World Series to get a chance to hire their man. This time around, it’s Farhan Zaidi, last offseason’s big hire, who has had to be patient.

But Zaidi and the Giants appear to be zeroing in on a new manager.

According to league sources, the Giants are believed to have narrowed their search to former Phillies manager Gabe Kapler, Royals quality control coach Pedro Grifol and Astros bench coach Joe Espada, who is coming in for a second in-person interview now that Houston’s bid for a title is over.

The Giants talked to Espada on the phone early in a search process that kicked into gear in the week after Bruce Bochy’s final game. Before Game 3 of the World Series, he flew from Houston to San Francisco for several hours of interviews before catching a late afternoon flight to Washington D.C.

Wait a minute- “quality control coach”?

Man, Hensley Meulens must be pretty ticked off right now. He's given years to the organization, groomed under Bochy, and doesn't make a finalist list?

I’m going with Kapler. Still has a new car smell but won’t make rookie mistakes

I’m going with Kapler. Still has a new car smell . . .
That’s just the coconut oil.

Do they still sell white shoe polish? Maybe that would help?

In other news, I've seen some rumblings that Bochy didn't exactly retire since he has himself made recent rumblings about wanting to manage again. Curious. One of those non-firing firings??

The Royals, their players and their beat writers always raved about Grifol - he's had the "future manager" label for as long as I can remember.

Of course, they passed him up for Mike Matheny, so make of that what you will.

I hear Dusty is available.

On Bochy, he announced early enough that I assume Zaidi hadn’t told him he was out. I would believe that Zaidi told him he’d be reviewed at season’s end and that Bochy decided to avoid the hassle of questions and save his dignity by pretending to retire.

But yes by seasons end he started saying explicitly that he wasn’t retiring from baseball but would consult the giants next year then look for managing jobs the year after
