Sources: Mike Moustakas agrees to 4-year, $64M deal with Reds

Infielder Mike Moustakas and the Cincinnati Reds are in agreement on a four-year deal worth $64 million, league sources tell ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Moustakas, who turned 31 in September, was a free agent for the third straight offseason after earning $18.7 million in a pair of one-year deals.

He hit .254 with 35 homers and 87 RBIs last season for the Milwaukee Brewers, earning his third All-Star selection. After starting the season at second base, he moved to third when Travis Shaw slumped.

The Reds plan to play Moustakas at second base.

Someone here will be awfully pleased by this news…..

This is a year longer than I would have liked, but I'm glad to see the Reds make an aggressive move. They got lucky with a couple of good years from Scooter Gennett, but the luck ran out when he got hurt in spring training last year. They suffered through a pretty miserable season from 2B between Jose Peraza, Derek Dietrich, and Scooter's corpse.

interesting they're putting him at 2B. I always thought he was a solid defender, but I would have questioned the range, although with the way teams shift, I guess its not as important.

With Moose and Suarez in tow, you have to wonder what they think of Jonathan India.

I was upset when the Braves traded their #1 prospect Peraza, but little guys who can put the ball in play in MilB but have very little threat of XB power seem to get chewed up in MLB. When the worst result of the AB is going to be a single, you get challenged a lot, which dries up walks, and leaves you with a very empty batting line even if you can hit for average. You have to turn into Altuve/Albies, or it just doesn't seem to work.

Given how the Reds have operated in recent years, you have to wonder if they think at all.

and to think the Reds once considered him untouchable

Last year the Reds' second basemen included Peraza, offensive weirdo Derek Dietrich, semi-hot prospect Josh VanMeter, former All-Star Scooter Gennett, and various doses of Freddy Galvis, Kyle Farmer, etc. Plus they still have India. I wouldn't be surprised if one of those guys is more valuable than Moustakas going forward, but who knows which one.

It looks to me like they paid retail for Moose. And, eh, that's okay. You can't do too much of it, but you can do some of it. If India turns out to be good they'll have an excess of infielders (and I guess that this means that Senzel is an outfielder permanently). But India isn't ready yet, and if he turns out to be better than Moose you can always trade one or the other of them.

As a prospect, Peraza reminded me a lot of Rafael Furcal. Middle infielder with high average, zero power, huge stolen base numbers.

At least Furcal had secondary muscle mass. Of course, as an 18 year old, Furcal was 21.

Good for Moose finally getting a reasonable contract. I had nearly given up on him ever getting a multi-year deal. Right off-season this time... I guess.

Puts him just over 82 million for six years (2018-2023). Should have obviously taken the qualifying offer for 2018 then it would have been over 90. Wonder if that's near what his original expectation was.

It's actually sort of crazy to me he got a fourth year, now. I guess you could argue he was more likely to get a multi-year offer this off-season, but 16 million AAV is not too shabby. Reds must really be sold.

Moustakas seemed like the guy who'd gotten screwed the most by the collusion and reevaluation of older players of the last couple years. I don't root for or against him but it's nice to see him get the payday he should have had already.
