Sources: New York Mets to call up touted 3B prospect Brett Baty

The New York Mets are calling up third baseman Brett Baty, one of the top prospects in baseball, to help stem the tide of injuries to their infield in recent days, sources familiar with the move told ESPN.

Baty, 22, is expected to fly to Atlanta, where the Mets played the second game of a four-game series Tuesday night, losing 5-0. They placed infielder Luis Guillorme on the injured list Monday with a groin strain that will sideline him for more than a month, and Eduardo Escobar could join him on the injured list with a strained oblique.

Ranked the 37th-best prospect in baseball by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel, Baty is a left-handed-hitting slugger who went 12th overall in the 2019 draft to the Mets. While some teams dinged Baty for being an older high school player, the Mets bought into the bat and have been rewarded mightily. Between Double-A and a week’s worth of games at Triple-A, Baty is hitting .315/.410/.533 with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs.

I get the Baty call-up but not so much Marrero. What was the point of keeping Blankenhorn on the 40-man roster if they weren't going to recall him?

hint on pronounced:

"You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you..."

in other news, the Padres today activated Matt Beaty from the IL and optioned him to AAA (yes, really).

p.s. I just saw Baty play 12 days ago in a Mets-Yankees AA game right before he got promoted. twas Yogi Berra Bobblehead Day to boot.

"there's the 1-0 pitch to Baty from Jake Malodorizzi - and it's lined deep to right, and it's outta here!"

HR on his first AB, obligatory family going ape #### in the stands (there's always a sister and a girlfriend in the bunch, and sometimes they kinda look alike...).

so far Mets have 3 HR and have made 3 outs, and it's 4-0

sweet, sweet swing. big hug from Canha and an even bigger one from Lindor in the dugout. kid is STOKED and rightly so.

SNY announcer Gary Cohen noted before the HR that there was something appealing about having a 3B named Brett.

Marerro can back up SS. Unless you think McNeil can, someone had to be Lindor's emergency backup.

As for Blankenhorn, I couldn't tell you....but, I don't think he does SS even semi-competently either.

I'm just surprised to see Deven Marrero still hanging around the majors. He was playing for the Long Island Ducks earlier this year. Some of his teammates included:

Rusney Castillo
Lew Ford (yes, that Lew Ford)
Sam Travis
Alejandro De Aza
Tzu-Wei Lin

By chance I saw the Mets AAA team this year, and Marrero and Lin were playing. It was a who's who of former Red Sox backup middle infielders.

Lew Ford is awesome. Total baseball lifer. Seriously, look at this.

BOS A ball,
major league career with the Twins,
off to the Hanshin Tigers in Japan,
CIN AAA,
Long Island Ducks,
Venezuelan winter league,
Oaxaca in the Mexican league
back to the Ducks,
BAL AAA
back to the Ducks,
MLB with the Orioles (at 35)
BAL minor leagues,
fourth stint with the Ducks,
back to Venezuela
a few games in the Caribbean Series,
ducks,
back to Venezuela
off to DR
Tijuana in the Mexican League
Ducks
another winter in Venezuela/DR
ducks
ANOTHER winter this time in DR and Mexico
and then since 2017 he's been playing for the Ducks

And he's still active, in 2022, at age 45. And he's still got something in the tank - he's sixth in the team in slugging (discounting three guys with nominal amounts of playing time).

If we're talking SS, it seems a bit surprising the club didn't opt to sign Villar, who opted for free agency at the end of last month. Was there a clubhouse chemistry issue last year that resulted in the Mets not even attempting to re-sign him over the winter?

Holy crap, Lew Ford is *still* active? I remember him as an elder statesman for the Ducks... ten years ago.

I was at the game in 2011 where he pitched his one career inning. It was the first game of a doubleheader where the Ducks got blown out. It looked like he was throwing knuckleballs, or at least something slow with weird movement.

Mets today claimed former White Sox INF stalwart Yolmer Sanchez, who I assume will replace Marrero on the roster (the latter stole a base as a pinch-runner in the 9th inning tonight in what, alas, figures to be the final MLB appearance of his career).

YSanch was 4 for 37 with Red Sox this year.
hmm, he only has 10 MLB starts at SS - is a 2B-3B by trade in 651 games.
career OPS+ of 79.
can get you a CS when you need it most - 30 for 55 on SB tries overall.
and that's before he turned 30 !

Alejandro De Aza is still active?! He was a starting outfielder for the White Sox when Kenny Williams was GM.
