Sources: Ottavino agrees to 1-year deal with Mets

The Mets’ march toward pitching depth continued on Sunday. A day after acquiring starter Chris Bassitt in a deal with the A’s, the team agreed to terms on a one-year, $4 million contract with reliever Adam Ottavino, according to multiple sources.

The Mets have not confirmed the deal, which is pending a physical. General manager Billy Eppler declined comment for that reason, saying only: “If we can locate a talented right-handed reliever, I would definitely welcome it.”

Once that move becomes official, Ottavino will join Edwin Díaz, Seth Lugo and Trevor May at the back of New York’s bullpen. He posted a 4.21 ERA in 69 appearances last year for the Red Sox, striking out 71 batters in 62 innings. Since 2018, Ottavino has averaged 11.9 strikeouts per nine innings while producing a 3.05 ERA for the Rockies, Yankees and Red Sox.

As a Red Sox fan, I am appreciative for what Ottavino did to help Boston get to the playoffs (when few expected the team to win 90+ games). However, I am also very comfortable with him not being on the team in 2022.

We got him from the Yankees in exchange for nothing...in fact, in exchange for taking on his salary for 2021, the Yankees gave Boston a decent pitching prospect (Franklin German), and it was hoped Ottavino could be a decent-to-good veteran reliever in a rebuilt bullpen.

He ended up being a lot more important than that, to the point where we fans were like, "Get the game to Whitlock, then Ottavino, then Barnes, and we'll win." And that was true for a while.

Through July 21st, he pitched in over 40 games, high-lev situations, and was outstanding. Tons of Ks, ERA of 2.57, very reliable.

From July 22nd on, he was cooked: 7.04 ERA, 46 runners allowed in 23 innings, couldn't use him with any confidence. The team leaned on him heavily in the first half, and he had nothing left (it wasn't a lack of effort).

I wish him nothing but success - if we didn't have him last year, we don't make the playoffs. And maybe the Mets will be able to get quality innings from him, as long as they don't use him too much.

If you have a student, they will be returning to school in the fall. Be sure they are ready with the right supplies, and that they feel safe by starting to talk with them about what their experience will be like and also check assignment writing service to manage the task. I can break down the draft budget and have our team dig into potential savings from last year and schedule the next P&L meeting.
