Sources: Philadelphia Phillies agree with lefty reliever Brad Hand on 1-year, $6 million deal

Left-handed reliever Brad Hand and the Philadelphia Phillies are in agreement on a one-year, $6 million contract, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Hand, 31, pitched for the Nationals, Blue Jays and Mets last season, posting a 6-7 record with a 3.90 ERA and 21 saves.

A three-time All-Star with 126 career saves, Hand was shipped to Toronto for catcher Riley Adams as part of a Washington teardown leading up to the trade deadline.

The Phillies seem convinced that the one thing they need to improve is to sign away relievers from the Mets....

(FTR, the Phillies pen has been insanely annoying these last two seasons. Archie Bradley didn't really help last year, and it remains to be seen if Messrs. Knebel, Familia and Hand will improve it a bit).

not since Ryan Howard signed that preposterous contract have Mets fans been as thrilled with a Phillies deal as when they inked Familia.

The Jays traded a decent prospect off their 40-man in Riley Adams for Hand at the trade deadline only to release him halfway through a pennant race because he lit everything on fire every time he took the mound.

Surprised to see him get 1/6.

Hand has also lost quite a bit of velocity IIRC for a guy that didn't have tons to spare.

Yep, $6 seems a bit much but it's just one mediocre season so far for a guy who was very effective before that. There are 4 tiers of reliever money -- big closers get $15 or so; top set-up guys, maybe big closers get $9-11; the 7th-inning types get $5-6; then the guys who have survived the grind without sucking get $2-4; after that it's all arb/min. So Hand is getting slotted in as a bad #2, good #3 reliever when maybe he should be a "grind" guy with a good chance he's already at the end of his journey.
