Sources: Rockies, Germán Márquez agree to 2-year extension

Right-hander Germán Márquez and the Colorado Rockies are in agreement on a two-year, $20 million contract extension, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Friday.

The team announced the extension but did not disclose terms.

Márquez, 28, had Tommy John surgery in May and will miss most of 2024….

Márquez will make $10 million both years with $10 million in potential performance bonuses for 2025, sources said.

Colorado did have a $16 million contract option on Márquez for 2024 with a $2.5 million buyout

Wait, what? The team could have gotten out of this for $2.5 M, instead they guarantee one injured year and one at least partly rehab year for $20M plus incentives? They get one year of Marquez for possibly $30 M? How did these negotiations go -- "sure, sure, you COULD walk away for $2.5 M ... ORRRRR ... you can turn a $16 M option on a pitcher you hoped was healthy into a $20 M guarantee on a pitcher you know is not and, if he comes back well, it will only cost you an extra $10 M."

I always figured the Rockies made decisions by, like, reading entrails or something.
