Sources: Seattle Mariners, James Paxton agree to 1-year, $8.5 million deal

Left-hander James Paxton and the Seattle Mariners are in agreement on a one-year, $8.5 million deal, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Saturday.

The contract includes reachable bonuses that could take its value up to $10 million, sources said.

Paxton, 32, returns to the city where he spent the first six years of his career. The Mariners traded the pitcher to the New York Yankees in the winter of 2018.

Instead, the Angels traded for Alex Cobb. Ugh. I think this is a pretty good deal for the Mariners.

I had the same vomitous reaction. One year, $8.5 million, and the Angels couldn't make that happen? FFS.

With $750K bonuses for 10 & 20 starts, Paxton is likely to make $10M absent a major injury. Still a reasonable price.

Reasonable price, but odd deal for a non-contender. No option years? You'd have thought the M's would have paid more to get one or two options.
