Sources: Texas Rangers, OF David Dahl agree to 1-year deal

Free-agent outfielder David Dahl and the Texas Rangers are in agreement on a one-year deal for around $3 million, sources familiar with the agreement told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The 26-year-old Dahl was nontendered by the Colorado Rockies earlier this month but should find plenty of playing time with the Rangers.

Dahl is recovering from right shoulder surgery in September, his latest setback. In 2015, he had his spleen removed after running into an outfield wall in the minors. A rib-cage injury sidelined him in 2017. In 2018, he missed two months with a broken right foot.

Just $2.5 M last year according to b-r so this is a small raise. Given he played only 40% of 2020 (as in 24 games) and played terribly, it's hard to see how he could have done any better than this in arb. Strange for the Rox to walk away from this one although it's obviously quite possoble that the Rangers are just giving away $3 M given Dahl's history.

Bridich gives Davis, McGee, Shaw, Desmond and Murphy something like $170 million, and gets negative WAR out of each contract.
David Dahl gets fired.

And aside from the injuries, Dahl's an odd one. 103 OPS+ career with a .358 BABIP. Coors has a higher BABIP but that still seems high. Apparently he didn't play center very well, which is also disappointing. Still, $3m...ashtray money, etc.

It’s not $3 million, it’s a couple of years of control if he pans out. Otherwise he doesn’t get anywhere near $3 million. It was a strange non-tender

Related? Rockies analytics department gutted by departures, widening the Coors Field gap (Athletic/paywall).

According to multiple sources, four of the six members of the Rockies’ research and development team have left since the end of last season, essentially knee-capping an analytics department that was already among the smallest and least effective in baseball.

Most of those who departed left for jobs outside of baseball.

-1 WAR last year in 24 games, which is impressive.

The Royals should have been in on this at this price.

Rangers seem to be positioning themselves to win a pennant next year, if AAAA were an actual league.

I could see a David Murphy type of resurgence for him in Texas. Similar build and game, both high 1st rounders, Murphy kicked around in the Red Sox organization before having a productive career.

The only thing I can think of is that he can't stay on the field, but even in that respect, they have some other options to turn to (Olivares, maybe Lee or Isbel by midsummer). He isn't much of an OBA guy, and DM said he wanted OBA guys, so maybe they're pursuing a guy like Robbie Grossman.
