The Toronto Blue Jays are finalizing a trade to acquire starter Steven Matz from the New York Mets for three prospects, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Wednesday.
Matz, a 29-year-old left-hander, agreed to a $5.2 million, one-year deal with the Mets in December.

1. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: January 27, 2021 at 10:42 PM (#6002339)I don't think this is going to go well for Matz in the AL East. He has given up 1.7 HR/9 the last 4 seasons in the NL East, in a park that's not particularly prone to homers. He's got some solid stuff but I don't think he's especially likely to be average next year.
Alternatively, I'm not sure I can root for Trevor Bauer. Hopefully if they sign him his contract includes a Twitter/media ban.
- Mets fans generally like(d) him and
- they'll be happy about this deal even if all the Mets got was a vintage Rance Mulliniks bobblehead.
Long Island native, and the whole family was in the stands in his debut at Citi Field where he won and I think knocked in 4 runs for some sort of record. iirc he lived at home at least through his rookie season.
showed some promise, never seems to have said or did anything stupid.
Matz just never panned out, and it was time to shuffle the deck. Mets fans will wish him well - and not miss him all the same. now, if he shuts down the Yankees here and there (!), all the better.
:)
I would be surprised if this is a meaningful indicator about Bauer because the Mets would have been foolish to enter 2021 expecting any meaningful contribution from Matz.
And now he REALLY can't get a chance to hit. Batted .228 in 61 PA in 2019.
This is more about the Jays freeing up a 40-man spot (lose two, gain one) for Marcus Semien, and Pete Walker getting another arm to tinker with.
If Matz grabs the #5 spot in the rotation, that's a win for the Jays as neither of the two MLB pitchers were going to grab it.
Steve Gelbs: Steven, what happened?
Steven Matz: I've gotta do better. I can't let that happen.
Regarding Bauer, should the Mets sign him and he gets into a Twitter beef with the team owner, that could keep the Daily News in business an extra year or two.
I don't think you spend $5M on a guy to free a 40-man spot, and tinker. They must think Matz has a good shot of contibuting.
If they just wanted the spot, they would have cut Foley.
Per MLBTR, the Mets have made Bauer a four-year offer, but there are still multiple teams in the mix.
He might do better in a new environment- but I am glad the Mets got rid of him.
Or to avoid extra attention from the SEC.
For what? I saw he'd chipped into the hedge fund bailout over Gamestop, but was there more than that?
anybody within a country mile of anything GameStop is getting harassed - at minimum.
But he did it trying to make money! There ought to be a law.
is anybody having trouble with BBTF?
when i try to jump to the last page of a thread, screen goes blank.
Deactivating your Twitter account would keep those messages out of the hands of the SEC how?
Right. People have suggested collusion among the shorts initially, and then collusion to lean on Robinhood and other brokerages once the short squeeze got serious.
Given Cohen's history, unethical, if not illegal, behavior wouldn't be surprising. He's been fined the GDP of small countries by the SEC in the past.
How is that the worst case? I like Matz and want him to succeed but the guy allowed 14 HR in 30 IP last season.

The worst case scenario for a pitcher is always catastrophic injury in his next outing and never throws another pitch again.
There are theoretically ways this can happen even if everyone is abiding by the rules.
This trade would only work if the Mets already had a vintage Garth Iorg bobblehead to platoon on the shelf with Mulliniks...
I would think worst case for a bullpen guy you sign on a 1-year deal looks more like Edwin Diaz 2019. He blows 5-7 games for you before you take him out of the role.
