Sparse crowds, slow ticket sales, no buzz—Red Sox facing an enthusiasm deficit

FORT MYERS, Fla.—What happens if they hold spring training and no one comes? Does it still exist?

When they weren’t pondering the existence of God or the nature of love, philosophers have wrestled with that thorny question since the dawn of Dodgertown. But they’ve never been able to test the hypothesis, because fans have always descended on even the remotest Grapefruit League outposts in droves.

Based on the first couple of days of workouts at JetBlue Park, however, the Red Sox may finally provide the answer.

The scene on Thursday was jaw-dropping. Even accepting that school vacation doesn’t start until next week, and even acknowledging that full-squad workouts don’t start until Monday, the lack of fans on the back fields while pitchers and catchers began plying their craft in advance of a 2020 season that’s still going to be played despite Mookie Betts wearing Dodger Blue was noticeable.

Gee, I can’t imagine why the fans aren’t interested…..

I hope it holds and carries over into the season. #### them.

"There's no (expletive) people here," observed one of the many retirees who provide a genial form of security.
I guess that's "Boston genial."

It's almost as if when ownership doesn't care about the team's current success the fans won't either.

From the same article: The Red Sox estimated that about 500 total fans have attended the first two days of workouts, which is not dramatically lower than years past, per a team official.

I don't know how many people you expect to fly down from Boston to watch fielding drills for AA pitchers.

If only they had a marketable young star.

It really is! Or as the joke (that the nanny won't approve of) goes...

Q: What's the Boston alphabet?
A: ####### A, ####### B, ####### C...

It's almost as if nobody ever cared how many people showed up on day 1 of pitchers and catchers reporting before so nobody has any idea what "normal" is.

I highly suspect this is mostly confirmation bias, and not based on any real apples to apples comparison.

But in my heart, I hope it's true. Cause fuck 'em. People refusing to pay for their crap, is the only language those dickheads understand.

Only autograph hounds and those in the area who really like the team have any reason to show up for early spring training workouts. Let’s see if the Red Sox exhibition games draw as usual.

Fun fact: Between 1922 and 1930, after the Red Sox sold or traded all their good players, they were one game away from finishing last 9 straight years. OTOH it only took 16 years after that for them to win a pennant.

Not 100% on board with this trade but it will be fun when the Red Sox contend.

With the saving from the Betts/Price trade, how much money can Bloom spend during the season to add reinforcements?

Immediately after the trade, over $20 million. They're down to around $16 million now.

Nothing says "February school vacation fun" like buying tickets online for spring/summer events.

I'm probably misunderstanding you.

edit...or didn't read the entire intro. D'OH!!!

So how are those regular season ticket sales going?

Umm ... school vacation in February? Why? I don't believe I've ever encountered that.

I can't speak to Boston, but Monday through Wednesday off school in Louisiana the week of Mardi Gras is pretty standard.

In New England, you can't exactly guess which week is going to be full of really nasty snow, but mid-February has traditionally been awful, and with President's Day already a holiday, you might as well use that as a week you shut the schools down because you'll probably have snow days that would have to be made up later anyway. That's less the case than it used to be, but now it's a fixture on the calendar and folks would go nuts if you changed it.

Ahhh ... interesting. Not a factor in the South or Arizona, the only places I've lived.

Sounds about right for Louisiana, Pat. I lived in Slidell, across Pontchartrain from New Orleans, from 8/88-2/90.
