SPTimes: Shoulder issue pains Rays’ Upton

Upton has a torn labrum in his left shoulder. It prevents him from swinging the bat with authority. It caused the shoulder to pop out of its socket in May, and it will require him to have surgery in the offseason.

And, yet, he returns to centerfield day after day.

“At this point there’s nothing I can do about it, especially with Carl (Crawford) and Evan (Longoria) already out,” Upton said. “It’s a little too late in the year, especially with the position we’re in, for me to pull up lame. I just have to suck it up and keep grinding, and do what I can do to get on base and get in scoring position for these guys.”

Well, I guess that could explain the drop in SLG from last year.

edit: maybe I should rtfa next time before I make such obvious comments...

If it was his hammy or something leg related, he'd have an excuse for the occasional lack of hustle.

If BJ were on the Dbacks, they would trade him for Daniel Moskos in the offseason.

Look at the positive here: Arizona's FO and medical staff are almost as knowledgeable about this injury as a sports columnist for the St. Petersburg Times!

Man, the Devil Rays have it made if Upton comes back next year with a +.500 slugging percentage. Between Longoria, Upton, and the rest of their young guys, they've got the world on a string, and that string wrapped around their finger.

Actually, Robert, there is a very good chance the sports columnist actually went to school. Or at least visited webmd.com once or twice. I can't say that about the Dbacks medical staff

What are the chances he's doing permanent damage right now? Is that worth it for him or the Devil Idiots?

I don't think Upton's doing any more damage than Hanley did last year and he doesn't seem to be showing any long-term effects.

And that's why you don't run hard to first base on easy grounders.

Because it can aggravate your unrelated shoulder injury?

Good God. I only thought I had a torn labrum earlier this year that turned out to be a "frozen shoulder" (the symptoms are similar). Getting the shoulder in certain positions is excruciatingly painful. I don't know how these guys manage to play through it.

Because it can aggravate your unrelated shoulder injury?

Yes indeedy it can if that means your arm twists behind your back the wrong way.

It upsets the humors in a contrariwise direction, yes. Upton needs to be covered in leeches.

Do you run with your arms just dangling at your side? I think not.

Well it makes B.J.'s decision not to run out those easy grounders more understandable. But dahlian's remark suggests, at least to me, that this particular injury explains why no one should run out easy grounders.

I was just playin' around anyway. Which he may have been too. I don't have a log of people's positions in the previous Upton discussions.

This only comes into play if you are A-rod...
